rebuilding 5 speed...what should be replaced?
what exact parts should be replaced during a rebuild of the transmission?
Im guessing the syncros and all the bearings. ARe there other seals or things that should be replaced? I just want to make sure that the shop I take it to replaces everything they should. Thanks!!! |
Yes to everything you said. Seals are cheap the first time around. Inspect the fifth gear assembly well including the gear itself, syncro, and slider. These parts take a beating if there were any missed second to third shifts, (second strait to fifth). Second gear syncros take some punishment if you do any hard shifting. Second, third, and fourth use a "double syncro". They're usualy pretty robust but check them for cracks or rounded teeth. Do youself a favor and use Redline MTL trans fluid after rebuild, much better shifting as a result. I believe the Mazda Website is offering some synros for the third gen at close out prices. I'll try to find that link if you'd like. Good luck!

oh if you have that link it would be great. I have redline synthetic in my diff for the last 18 months.

Try this link, click on clearance items, scroll to near bottom of page and you should see them. Free shipping on clearance items. You might want to compare prices with Ray @ Malloy Mazda 1-888-533-3400. Might be close. Hope this helps.

who is rebuilding it? are they good? how much?
|
I thought it was just 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears that had the double torque sensing synchros?
|
After referring to the factory service manual, we're both wrong. It's just second and third that get the double torque sensing syncros. Sorry for the bit of miss info.

Hey Zero, how bout you take the 8 to the shop, have them drop both trannys, and put them side by side.
This way we will finally know the differances between both and raise or lower the possibility of a 6 speed in an FD :D Hey... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . the 8 sucks ;) |

Sure the Rx-8's tranny is modern, smoother, precise and feels 150 times better...but... Its a miata tranny and the same tranny as in the Japanese Is300. These tranny's start to break after about 250 RWHP. FD tranny's while crude and often difficult to engage are bulletproof. |
if you want to do it right you need.
all the bearings all the seals all the synchros the pilot bearing the following should be looked at for likely replacement 1&2, 3&4, and 5&r hubsets, as they wear too the cone and enguagement teeth on the gears themselves why would you want an r8 tranny? its like 5x more shifting, and your rpms on the freeway will be higher |

They are able to keep their RPMs within the max hp area when shifting in the upper gears. Redline 4th then go to 5th. You'll wish you had another gear to get you 1000rpms closer to the sweet spot, and STILL have a final gear to go to get you even higher up in speed. Maybe you just haven't been up there enough times ;) |
Originally posted by ZeroBanger its actually considered the second best manual shifter gearbox, next to the s2000. Believe me, if you could get one in the FD you would love it. The problem is its not strong enough to support alot of Torque. You should have seen me at the dealer LOL. I kept going into 6th and bogging it out :p: I can't remember if I had to push a bit further out or if I just had to push down then out, but no one bothered to tell me this  |
Originally posted by Flybye I really like it, too. But reverse was a little tricky :p: You should have seen me at the dealer LOL.
