Rebuild or what
 

HEllo,

IO am in the process of pulling out my motor, i believe that i have a bad coolant seal due to the car sitting for a year and i have a major boost problem.

here is my question,

1) pull the motor, spend roughly 12-1400 on a rebuild kit from Atkins

OR

2) pull the motor send in to Rotary Rez, and pay him to do the rebuild.

I am leaning towards option 2 for the folowing, 1 i will have a warranty, a small one but none the less. 2, it keeps a noob outa the actual motor.... i know how to work on ondas and such but i am honestly scared to work on the internals on this car.

Anyone with an opinion please help me out.

send it in...im scared to rebuild mine but i know mine will go soon 141300Miles orignial non-rebuilt :fawk: but i will probably end up rebuilding it myself with some help actully, from my teacher.

Hey there I am close to you. I am in Hastings. I have rebuilt a few of the FD engines and so has damion, hes in blain. They are not to hard to to at all, especially if you only have a coolant seal. The sooner the better though the water will eat your Irons.

Rocking, if there is any way you could help me out that would be so incredibly awesome, i will pay for gas if that is any thing to you. The engine is going to be out soon, i just have to finish disconnecting the oil lines and the ecu. is ther any time you have free this week or weekend?

I have never heard of a coolant seal going bad simply from a rotary not being driven.

I would send it off, personally, but that is your choice.
As you mention, you DO get a warranty. You don't have to get a bunch of specialized tools.
You don't have to mess with the needle bearings in the front hub. And best of all, you won't be posting here a day/week/month after "doing your rebuild" and saying, "Engine quit running...what did I do wrong?"
Look, I'm 45 years old and have rebuilt literally dozens of engines of all shapes and sizes, both gasoline and diesel, automotive, marine, farm, and small power equipment over the years. I have a nice garage and have an extraordinary collection of 'special tools' I have collected in some 30 years of twisting wrenches.
And I didn't hesitate a second before deciding to NOT attempt to tear down and rebuild my engine....lol! :D

First off, make 100% sure the motor is the problem before tearing into it. A zillion things can cause boost problems, and very few of them the motor itself, so that shouldn't be a concern. What signs do you have of a bad coolant seal?

The motor is the easiest part of the whole deal - all the crap that bolts onto the motor is the real problem. Just read through the forum - there's countless "just put my motor in, won't start/run right/whatever" problems. You want to be SURE you're fixing the problem, not pulling the motor out and opening a whole new can of problems in addition to the ones you have.

well the coolant seal i think is bad because i smoke a Shi* load of white smoke and the mtor idles shi**y, lots of things i want to inspect/replace (ie ALL the hoses) will be easier witht the motor out, not only that but with a rebuilt engine it will (hopefuly) have 50,000+ life to come!! resale value is a bit better (im not planing on selling it), I want to do small upgrades and get myt motor to hjave around 300 to the wheels, and with a rebuild morot, and rebuilt turbos, i believe that i will be able to slowly reach my goal.
