Reasonable Rebuild Timeframe?
 

What do you guys consider to be a reasonable timeframe for a 13B-REW rebuild? Motor was delivered to the shop in early October. My last two calls went unanswered, with no return call. Seems to be one of the more well respected shops on this forum. Trying to be lenient with regard to delays from COVID - but starting to feel as though I'm being strung along at this point.

I dropped my engine off (full longblock with all accessories) and parts, with a no rush time frame and the shop did the reinstall. Total time was Less than a month. This was a 13B-T going into a Turbo II, but for the most part, I'd think any competent rotary shop should be able to do both in approx the same time with maybe a few hours on the REW due to the twins or accessories on the longblock in terms of labor hours once they start.

October? That's insane imho. Unless they dictated to you ahead of time that it would take that long. You are approaching a year at this point. The only two shops I've dealt with have done great work, Pettit, and Rotorsports.

How long did they tell you it would take before you dropped it off?

Did you drop it off with a HUGE number of rebuilds ahead of you?

I would expect a month from the time they were expecting it would be the upper limit of reasonable.

I've never dropped a car or a motor off at a shop for a rebuild, but I'd say timelines will vary significantly, based on lots of factors - for example, how busy the shop is, and what you're getting done, etc.. In any case, I hope you would have at least discussed your delivery schedule expectations with the shop up front, and come to a verbal agreement with the shop on those expectations, and better yet your schedule expectations were captured in writing in the service contract you signed upon dropping it off. That latter part (i.e., having a defined delivery date or timeline on contract) almost never happens because committing to a schedule on contract becomes a liability to the shop when unknown problems occur (COVID being a good example of that - shop can't do much when the gov't forces its employees to stay home).

The shop probably has a long backlog of work.

If it's not a long trip, I'd say pay them a visit in-person. Bring a way to take your stuff home if you don't like their answers, though.
