rear main seal?
 

Oil is coming out of access panel and vent, Im assuming its the rear main seal from searching around on here. Any links or tips for replacing it?

It's pretty straight-forward, remove the transmission, clutch and flywheel to reach it. I don't think they go bad often, but it could also be the 'O' ring on the rear stationary too. Still not a bad job while your there and neither are expensive....just alot of work to get to. You'll probably be able to tell for sure when you get the flywheel off, but you might want to have both ready.
When you get the FW off, examine the area on the back side that inserts into the seal for any rough surface and oil it up before you put it back in. I place the old seal on top of the new while taping it in slowly and evenly.

While you have the tranny out might not be a bad idea to change the front and rear seals on it too.

Do a search and use the FSM.

Don't forget to the lube the seal with engine oil, both the outer & inner edges . . .

Have a good look at the oil. Is it gear oil or engine oil?

I ask because the front seal of the trans can also leak through the same area.

Dave has a good point above, knowing the source will prepare you. Maybe it's hydraulic fluid.

When my rear seal leaked, it was pretty easy to tell through the lower inpection hole with a flashlight and with my fingers that the leak was coming from in front of the flywheel...rear main seal or stationary 'O' ring.

+1 on rear stat and tranny seals.

Mine started leaking after i had just put the engine in, so i removed the engine and resealed it.

Just be very careful when removing the rear stat gear, it takes a little bit of prying pressure. Just keep one hand down on it so it does not fly up, or turn the rotor(!).


In the FSM it says to seal the rear stat gear with the OEM o-ring AND silicone sealer, i dont know if the FSM was revised after they built my engine but my stat gear had no sealant on it from the factory.

Since it's so cheap, I always replace the rear-main seal and O-ring when doing a clutch or flywheel job.

I always use a thin layer of Hylomar on the flange of the stationary gear, and either engine-oil on the O-Ring or Parker's O-Ring Lube.
