Is that rear iron reusable? 0.05mm distortion...

On the first picture, we see scratches on top left. I can feel with my fingers that it is not smooth like the rest of the surface, but there's no way my nails can catch in any scratch. It simply feels less smooth.

And 2nd picture shows that a 0.05mm gauge can go under the straight edge. So the distortion is between 0.05mm aand 0.06mm. Maximum should be 0.04mm. What do you guys think of that extra 0.01xmm?

Thanks!

Max is listed for a reason. I would not use those, especially with the gouges by the intake ports. Also, you really need the mazda sst or similar tool to accurately check step wear on the irons. I've been following your other threads and by the time you piece together everything, it would be more cost effective to buy a brand new motor.

they can be lapped and re-nitrided

I bought every tools needed. I used a dial indicator to measure step wear and it is within specs. I bought all micrometers, V-blocks to measure E-shaft...

My budget for this engine is still okay. Like I stated on the other thread, eBay 100% refunded me for the damaged rotor housings, including shipping cost.

I don't like the gouges neither. But like I stated, I can only feel this part of the iron is just a bit rougher. No way my nails catch somewhere.

Thanks for your help I appreciate it.

I won't lap center iron/front iron, so I wonder if lapping only that iron would be a problem.

be more concerned about the nick inside the oil seal tract.

I would lap/renitride all 3 if you are going to do one. Again, it starts to add up.

Alright thanks for your advice, won't use the iron as it is now, that's too much.

That's what I thought.

Thanks to both of you for your help in my different threads I definitely appreciate it.

Not a problem

So, the seller sent me a 2nd rear iron. I feel so bad, it is far from perfect. I didn't measure the specs yet, but visual inspection reveals some stuff. What do you guys think? I don't want to be a bad buyer, but if I need to have it resurfaced, that's a no-go. He's a "rotary specialist".

1st picture reveals a dent in the rubber contact area.

2nd picture reveals side seal wear, my nails catch where is the wear (at 3 o'clock). Also, the surface is rougher than every other irons I've seen (see the small dots everywhere?).

I know my project takes forever to begin, but I'm away from home pretty often and I also got a ZR-1 (and actually pending purchase on a Viper), so I can still have fun with these 2 during the rebuild process.

Thanks!

Looks like it was damaged from being dropped or mishandled. I wouldn't use that either. I'd be afraid of the coolant system pressure pushing the seal inwards towards the jagged edge.

Not to be a jerk, but if you've got enough money for a viper and a zr-1, why don't you want to buy new irons and other major components?

Aaaahh......

Thanks again IRPerformance, that's what I thought. Oh well...

If it is not to be a jerk, what is it then? I don't feel like paying $6,000 for an engine that I build myself for the first time. Thanks anyway. I only need a rear iron now, everything else is OK.

Curiosity about how you keep making the same mistakes :)
