Rear Hatchback Lock
 

My rear hatchback lock on my '94 RX-7 is apparently a different lock than my doors and ignition. I've only had the car a few months and discovered this shortly after I bought it, but it just hasn't been that big of a deal. At any rate, it's obviously not a terribly big deal, but I would like to be able to open the hatchback from the outside. As it is now, I have to pull the lever everytime.

Questions...

1. Is it possible to just have the rear hatchback lock re-keyed to my other keys and locks?
2. If so, how much might that run?
3. If so, can anyone recommend someone in Houston that could do that?
4. If not, how much would a full lock set generally run?

seen a couple people sell an entire lock set for like $100....doors, hatch, ignition, glove box, keys.

btw...i would ASSUME that it would be more expensive (if its possible) to have the lock changed to match your current setup....

maybe you only have the valet key? does your key open the glovebox?

That's actually what I thought originally, that I had the valet key. However, my key does lock and open the glove compartment and rear bin. Plus, I went a Mazda dealer and had them make a key from my VIN...same result.

I suppose the cheapest thing would be to replace the whole set. I would just hate to buy a used set that ends up haveing problems, when all of my locks work perfectly right now...aside from the hatchback, or course, which doesn't work at all.

Just buy a blank key and have a lock-smith cut the key to your hatch lock.

I remember I had to do that back when I broke my key and I didn't have a spare. I took the lock assembly off the door and the lock-smith had it done in an hour.

Only down side is that you'll have 2 keys. One only for the hatch.

Another alternative would be to install an automatic hatch popper on your alarm...
