rear axle nut size

What size is the large nut on the rear axle? The nut holding the outer CV into the rear hub? This is for an FD.

saxyman990 05-20-04 03:47 PM

35mm. (1 3/8" will also work)

Thanks Rob.

Yep. Good luck man (you're gonna need it if you're trying to get those axles out of the hubs.)

BigIslandSevens 05-20-04 04:45 PM

Way to encourage him man!! j/k

Sometimes they can be a REAL bitch to get out. And other times they just fall out. Usually the first though. :(
Just soak the hell out of the bearing/axle joint and let it soak for a while. Then if they cause any trouble you can use a puller or a bigger hammer to get them out.:)

Are these going on the 510 your building?

Yes, the front and rear subframes, and therefore all of the suspension, engine, transmission, PPF, etc will be from a FD RX-7. So basically I'll have a lightweight, boxy looking 3rd gen.

My drivers side is stuck in the hub. I may need a new outer part of the axle. Can this be ordered sepereate? I'm putting chromoly's in.

Yes it can, However, The price for the new outer piece is only 120 bucks or so less than the entire axle assembled. Also, when you order the outer joint, You will get the outer CV joint, attached to a new axle shaft. Then you must remove your OLD inner CV joint and replace the rubber boot and clamps when you put in on the new outer joint/axle assembly..

At this point Murphy's law comes into play BIG time.

And that is as soon as you get all the parts back together and start to drive it,....The inner CV joint will almost certainly fail on you.( Due to it being origanal and old) Then you'll be kicking yourself for not getting the whole axle. The last time I got axles there were around 350 each( my price) if I remember correctly. Call Ray Crowe @ Malloy and talk with him about this. He is good about giving you what you want and need. Maybe if you weren't getting hybrid 300M chromemoly axle shafts and replacing the inner CV at the same time with your new Cobra 8.8" IRS differential... :)

Yes Jim I believe you have scared Murphy away from your neck of the woods..:)

Actually, I probably sent him a written invitation. :)

I guess 1point3 isn't one of the people converting to a Cobra IRS, so you were right. After all the hassle of assembly, new boot kits, and everything else, complete new axles start to look like a pretty good bargain.

If I told you guys how much money I have invested in a set of rx7 300m's, a Turbo II Clutch-style LSD, and 3.9's you'd call me stupid not you use it all. In all other cases, I agree that it's probably more cost effective to use jim lab's proposed setup. ;)

I may switch over at a later time when your cradle is available, but for now the turbo II diff has been proven to be capable of 9's without hassle.

Does anyone have a part number for the outer axle assembly that fits in the hub?

Parts lists are available at Mazdaformance.com.

I need a rear subframe from a FD if any of you who are switching to the Cobra diff. have your old one laying around.

The rear subframe isn't replaced as part of the swap. It's just "added to".

Put in a request and any available parts from participateing yards will be logged and you will be sent an e-mail saying they can fill your request.

I used them for getting the stock turn signals ( prior to knowing about the forum) There was actually a good but somewhat pricey yard near Jim. I think it may have been in Oregon but it was NW area. They seemed to have alot of FD parts. They were a Toyota and Mazda recycler.

93BlackFD just got a rear sub-frame from a yard I believe. You may try to PM him and ask where he got it.

Hope this may help you out.
