Re-sparked rotor love...
 

Well... About 3 months ago I got an S2000 from my parents (I'm 15, not to bragg) and I made some stupid choices and lost it... I also had an FC3 vert that I neglected when I got the S... So anyways, we moved to PA from GA and I am left car-less with the option to save up for a car and my parents would pay for half... (which is awesome!!). But I have discovered that as 15 I cant get 8k for an S within 1-2 years. But after looking and re-visiting this site I have fallen back in love with the RX7, this time its the FDs. So I have a few questions about them...

Are all of the FDs (1992-1995) turbo's of some sort?

What is the average price range? I've done some research in to prices, common locations, and a few other things but I want to know from the owners.

How much would it be to fix up an FD if it was a project car that ran (nothing extreme but just one that I could get for 5k.)?

What are some jobs that you had when you were my age? (Just for fun...)

i am going to say this.. i got my car at 17 and im 19 turning 20.. i love my 7 but lucky i had money saved up... price range could be from 14-16k for a decent one... how much to fix up.. whell the answer is too much even if you can do it yourself it will be a little cheaper but still expensive. and to fix up a fd as a project car.. lets just say you better have a deep pocket..

at 15 i (not to make fun of your age or anything) would stick to the fc or s2k (i acually wanted an fc first and still want one now)unless you have a great job

dont get me wrong i dont have a doubt in my mind you love and respect the car thats how i felt before and after i got mine

^^ Im trying to get a job at the local airport as a fuel boy (fills the planes with gas...) for a few bucks... (minimum wage for PA is like 7.15 i think :) ) So it should take me a little less than a year to get about 6k after tax.

Not to discourage you but the FD is not for you from what you have explained...

you can do great things with an fc too you should go down that road again.. hell even an fb go look at vids of DirectFreak he has a killer fb that can take on plenty of fd's and i think i have a video of him showing up a s2k..

For me its not about the speed or beating many other cars (which is very nice to have) but I like it just because the car is so rare and is one of a kind... I just love em'. Dont get me wrong, I always have liked RX7's because my mom had one but decided to throw it towards me because she wasnt in the sport mood anymore. I still drove it every week or so but its the FDs that really shocks me...

6k isnt gonna get you much for sure (except heartache, and a cool looking driveway ornament). Better look into the FB or FC instead.

Well, first off, it's good to see someone who is 15 posting an intelligible and grammatically correct thread. You seem like a smart kid and you started by asking the right questions. I'm no expert by far, just someone that understands your love of the FD. I wanted one desperately since it first came out, but never had the money untill last year. By money, I mean I wasn't willing to kill myself trying to pay for one. Unfortunately, it's been killing me anyways.:) The FDs tend to be expensive, first in their original cost and then adding performance parts. Of course, my little 90 Miata quickly became an expensive project car too so maybe it's just me. Anyways, in answer to your questions:

Yes, the 93 and up were all turbocharged cars with twin turbos. The twins are great, but are kind of complicated so a lot of people spend the money to go single.

Go on autotrader.com and other sales sites and see what they are going for in your local area. The cost of an FD varies greatly according to its condition and milage. Many people don't take care of these cars properly so be careful when you are buying. A roller in Texas goes for around 6k to 8k, while a decent FD runs between 12k and 18k.

This is too hard to answer as it'll depend on what you want to do with the car. Check out some of the vendor's websites, see what kind of toys they offer, and you can get a good idea of the cost. If you meant you were expecting to find an FD for 5k...well, it would be a roller and expect to put a lot of money in to it. Like a bare minimum of 5k if you're really, really lucky and about 10k if you aren't.

Let's see...I've worked at a carwash, toy store, apartment complex, computer repair store, hotel clerk, department store, photo shop, restaurant, cattle ranch, lawnmowing business, painting business, and finally 8years in the US Air Force leaving as a Captain.

And only 6K? That means you're putting in 3K? In any case, its better to buy the best you can afford off the bat. Project cars wind up being more expensive in the end.

There is no way you can afford an FD, period. Tons of threads just like this, including another one I just closed. We appreciate your enthusiasm and will welcome you later when you can afford it.

I am also a young enthusiast of the fd. I purchased mine when i was 17 and with only 1500 miles on the engine, last week i believe i blew a seal on one of the rotors. I bought, essentually, a roller for 13k with a lot of aftermarket parts and completed my "project" with only 20k spent to have a 500+whp car with high quality parts. I just had bad luck and for unknown reasons, I have to start over again. If you are worried about having enough money for a fd, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. I am currently in a financial situation that I can support having a car like this as a fun non-daily driver but I started thinking i could use it as my dd and ended up bumming rides off of my friends, gf, and constantly borrowing my moms g35c during the building stages. If i was on a tight budget, I would have bought an fc and a nice daily driver and build/worked on the fc until i had the knowledge and experience to maintain an fd to keep it in good shape and running.

Do us a favour... don't get one...

How exactly do you loose an S2000?? Your parents must be pretty understanding, when i was 15 (god i just realised im more than double your age.... i feel old) the closest thing i got to my own car was on my nintendo nes!....

As stated though, these types of cars are alot of hassle and I think your going to struggle with the up keep, plus I think when you get to that stage when it's all about money you loose the enjoyment factor of what the car is really about.

Not thought of something like an MR-2 turbo instead?

I lost the S2000 due to my irresponsible actions of "hanging out with the wrong people"... one of my friends recently got into pot and i decided to get in on it with him... so long story short, I promised my father that I wouldnt do it again, and the day before I left for SUWS (School of Urban and Wilderness Survival) (I wasnt the best kid on the block), needless to say I did... :( But that is okay. I think saving for half will increase my value of the car... and buy half I mean my parents will match me dollar for dollar for THE CAR and not the repairs.

The problem with an MR-2 is not the bug headlights but its a front wheel drive car. I love rear wheel just because of the handling on turns and the challenge. From my expierence with front wheel drive cars, they are too easy!

MR2s are MR. :) Mid engine, Rear drive.

^ ohh... yes I am verry thankfull. For those who are saying an FD is not the car for me can you please explain your reasoning because I cant read minds... :( just wasnt born that way :).

Because you have proven yourself to be irresponsible in the past, therefore you do not need a fast/sporty car of any kind. You are also 15 years old...don't need a fast/sporty car of any kind. You need to learn to be responsible and learn driving skills before you hop into a sports car. Not only that, but you are looking to get into one of the most tempermental cars on the planet. If you do something wrong with this car, it will bite you. If you're only looking to spend $6000 on an FD you will get the bottom of the barrel. You will get something with high miles or problems. Both of those will cost an assload of money in replacement parts very quickly. If you're making minimum wage, how are you going to pay for the insurance? How are you going to pay for the gas? How are you going to pay for any sort of problem that comes up? You can't rely on your parents to take care of these problems for you...you will need to grow up someday.

So, we have given you the answers. You're too young, you don't make enough to take care of it on your own, you have proven yourself to be irresponsible in the past, and you are getting in over your head, especially if you're looking for a bargain (cheap) car to begin with.

But your parents will buy it for you anyway, so why are you asking?

with 6k that means a 12k car... There is no need to get hostile on this topic. Thank you for stating your opinion but once again, please do not comment on YOUR interpritation of MY respect for this car. Ive been around one ALL OF MY LIFE and know the difficulties of an RX7. Although ours never had major problems (an amazement) that doesnt mean to say I am irresponsible. I can handle myself in a sports car responsibly and reasonible. I appriciate your feedback but its all negative and no offense but I would rather hear from someone who acctualy has expierence with FDs. For the insurance issue my parents are taking care of that for me ;). I do not want to hear about my past but its going to get said so thanks for bringing it up... Recently I went to a program that really teaches people what is going on and how to deal with things, so please hold your comments on my past if you do not live with me.

I have heard too many stories of 16 year olds getting FDs and crashing them soon after. You could be killed.

find one locally for sale and ask the person if you can take it for a spin. Then go from there.

also FDs need more attention than normal cars, looking at your posts im not sure you can give it that attention :(
