RE GT2 Wing - pics

Here are some pics of my initial test fit of the RE GT2 wing I got from chuck at RotaryExtreme ( http://www.rotaryextreme.com/ )

REAmemiya FD3S 12-28-04 09:39 PM

nice...i have this same wing...just to let you know, you should switch around the ends...that's how RE-Amemiya does it =)

damian 12-28-04 09:49 PM

yeah, i just have them 'hangin' right now, but they may stay that way ;-)

Mr. Stock 12-28-04 09:49 PM

What is the weight of the wing?

And why did you switch?

i did weight it and cant find where i wrote it down... its not much for how frikkin huge the wing is. I'll try to weight it again.

i swtiched for 2 reasons, one, i like this wings visually with where my track car is going in terms of looks, and for more down force, this is a go car, not a show car, and i need the rear to stay down when im doing 150 mph through turn one at BIR :-)

rotoboy661 12-28-04 09:56 PM

looks sick

how much u pay??

mike

damian 12-28-04 10:03 PM

ask chuck for pricing ;-)

Do you have proof that this wing induces more downforce that your previous wing? It certainly looks like it would cause more drag.

The reason why I am asking is because I am interested in changing the Mazda 99 spec wing to a GT style wing on my car for more downforce. The 99 wing has an (inverted) aerofoil profile but as far as I can tell most or all of the other wings seem to be designed for aesthetic appeal rather than for producing efficient downforce(i.e. without high drag).

Any comments?

not really :-) other than they run this wing on many race cars in japan.

well, 'supposedly' this wing (taken from RE amemya gt2 wing) was tunnel tested by RE Amemya or somthing like that.... ill let you know next season when i get to drive with it ;-)

believe me, i got if for function over looks, and i based that decision on the tid bits i read/saw/researched and what other people i specifically asked about the wing who I trust in their aero knowledge.

damian 12-28-04 10:27 PM

for example, it almost identical (ir is identical) to the wing run on this car:

...and i figure they know more about what they are doing than i know :-)

Nice wing

Mr. Stock 12-28-04 10:43 PM

The previous wing on your car was a Mazdaspeed GT-C type wing, right?

Did it have an aerofoil profile/cross-section?

damian 12-28-04 10:49 PM

yep, its was a ms gtc wing... and yeah, it was like a 'upsidedown' airplane wing shape. :-)

as is the new wing (just much bigger), but it does have the 'raised' area in the middle where the air comes over the roof.

MakoDHardie 12-28-04 11:01 PM

Nice wing, damian. Chuck's got mine in a box shipping out to me right now. I think Chuck actually has these made in Japan. I might be wrong but you can ask him.

damian 12-28-04 11:17 PM

yep, thats is what i understood too.

Looks HOT Damian! I've always considered going w/ either that spoiler, or this one, which is on the new C-west DRFT car (couldn't find a better pic of it than this):

All wings, even the ones from ebay have the tear drop shape, but having the tear drop shape is just the beginning of a wing design =)

nice, they are basically the same shape... differente end caps and that one has taller mounts.

not true, i have seen MANY wings that are not tear drop shape, they are just a flat 'wing'...in which case they are not really a wing, and more of a 'deflector'...those kind are usually for looks and not for function.

And tear-drop shape is referring to what exactly? Are you talking about completely flat blades vs. slightly indented, so the edges are taller than the center? Or are you talking about that little 'raised' area in the middle where the air comes over the roof?

First image i got from google image search under 'tear drop' :)

http://www.f1nutter.co.uk/tech/aero.php
here is a good info site for basic aerodynamic principles, alot more can be found on search engine if you are interested.

Regarding the gt wing with a hump in the middle, i've wondered for a long time what it's purpose is. Some people are saying it's for getting around regulations where rear wing height is limited. From my brief conversation with an aerodynamicist, he said the hump in the middle reduces rear wing drag slightly, he also says most 'hump' gt wing available to public is made incorrectly, but I couldn't understand what the correct shape he was describing from his hand movements =)

Alpine 12-29-04 03:42 AM

here is a better link for description of a wing specifically

look under 'wings'

Scrapiron7 12-29-04 07:20 AM

I love that wing, and think it looks beautiful. But since I don't race, it wouldn't serve much purpose for me :(

PhoenixDownVII 12-29-04 09:15 AM

Now Damian, you're NOT going to take the old one off the racecar and put it on your MBM right? Right? Better not, or I will have to put your Vid's on strike!

Use the old wing as a shelf in the garage! :P

damian 12-29-04 10:04 AM

old wing is sold...nothing is goin on the street car anymore :-)
