Random Tech cat

Hey Guys,

My stock cat is now dead and I'm leaning towards the Random Technology direct fit.
I'm in Cali where smog rules are run by the local SmogNazi. So, I think that the Random will be the right choice for me. Anyone know where I can get one for less that $380ish?

Yes, my car just failed today. The HC was twice the limit. This is after I just change; plugs 7s and 9s, new Magnacore wire, fresh oil, tps fixed, and denatured alcohol was thrown in for good measure. It still failed! The ACV is working as it should.

Thanks, Jay

sucks to hear that. i jus got my car smogged 3 weeks ago. i put on my stock ecu, and stock catback with a universal highflow i got at a muffler shop and i passed. well i did fail the first time jus like yours, double HC then the guy ran it again after he revved my car up to 4500 rpm for 2 mins to warm up the cat and i passed perfectly.

Make sure the 15mph test is run in 2nd gear and the 25mph test run in 3rd gear before spending the money! BTW, the Random hi-flow ceramic cat has NUMEROUS reports of early death/failure on FDs. I would go with the rx7.com Bonez hi-flow ceramic cat or you could try one of the new Metallit core cats. Do a search for those.

I did a pre-test with the car off the dyno twice and both times it failed. Here in Cali, if you do a pre-test on the dyno and you fail, you car will be tagged as a gross polluter. Once you are a G/P, your car will need to tested evey year. That is the reason why didn't have it put on the dyno.

The Bonez high flow cat has long been known as the best for the FD with lots of people passing smog using it. Check it out here: http://rx7.com/store/rx7/fdexhaust.html

Do a search for it and you'll see lots of people singing its praises.

Most of the high flow cats on the market are the same and in most cases there is no difference between them except the price.

I would second that!

I bet this would be due to the standardization of emissions restrictions (standardized emissions = standardized cats).

Here in AZ the emissions are just as tough as CA...we just don't have as strict a visual.
