Radiator Fan Troubles
As the title states I am having troubles with my rad fans. Last night both fans failed to come on at 90 degrees as I have set if the pfc. I managed to get home without over heating but now the fans will not turn on at all. I have tested relays 1,2 and 3 and they are all functioning properly. The 15A fuse blew so I replaced that. I have tested both fan plugs while in diagnostics mode with a volt meter and the right side plug gets 12V to one pin and 0 to the rest while the left side plug gets 12V to all 4 pins. At this point I am unsure as to what is wrong. I am assuming something is wrong after the relays but am not 100% sure.
Thank you for your time. -Eric |
It's pretty strange that both would fail to come on at once. What is the condition of the car and motors? Perhaps the thermo switch itself is faulty. If you ground the relays properly, you should be able to test the motors. Or, if you have the cooling fan recall harness you could use that test ground instead.

do they rotate freely by hand? Mine got frozen stuck and I could smell electrical burn when they failed...

Did your fans used to work, and now they don't? Or, did you never see them work before? |
Since you're from Canada and saying it's a 92 I'm guessing it's a RHD Japan import?
The fan recall as far as I know was only on US cars FYI. As stated, make sure the fans can spin by hand and aren't jammed up or something. Do they kick on if you turn on the AC? Is the car lowered? Common problem is the tire eating into the fender liner and eating into the wiring harness. That's worth taking a look at. If you blew a fuse, they typically don't blow just for the heck of it. Something is up, either a damaged or shorted wire. Also which 15a fuse was blown? How did you know it was blown? Dale |

Upon further inspection the fan motors may be the culprit. They spin but do need a fair bit of force. The power to the plugs is also a concern of mine. The wiring harness appears to be intact.

Hot dog your car is low. That fender liner and harness are living life on the edge.
|
I am now certain the wiring is a bit funky some where. The coolant buzzer is now on despite being full of coolant
|
Jack up the front of the car, pull both front wheels, and THOROUGHLY look at the fender liners. It doesn't take much to rub through the liner and into the harness.
Typically the harness can be fixed in place and zip tied up higher to keep it away from the tire. That may not be it, but it's a common problem and worth checking first. Dale |
I found out the harness going into the back of my fan is failing. When is push down on the wires on the back of the fans then it works.
