Radiator fan not turning on
 

I have been searching but with no luck in my search.

Here's my issue: radiator cooling fans will not turn on at all. Worked when I bought the car, and was set to turn on at 87 degrees in the PFC.

I've checked the fuse and it passed a continuity test as well as a visual inspection. Next thing I looked into was the relays. at first I couldn't find them, as some owner had relocated them zip tied in a bundle behind the passenger oil cooler. The connectors have a tun of corrosion and I doubt the pins inside line up accurately. I now do not know how to identify which relay is which, didn't know if there is another way as they are all bundled out of order.

My question is, could a relay cause the fans to not turn on at all? I know they regulate different cooling speeds, but wasn't sure if they handled the initial activation of the fans. Someone told me to check the thermoswitch and make sure it was still connected....it is.

Any help is appreciated, never tested a relay so kinda doing the google thing for now

I had fan troubles and did every test imaginable, I caught the fans not coming on too late and overheating my engine. All my tests checked out and im coming to the conclusion that theirs a break in my engine harness somewhere.

In the FSM there is a page that tells you how to test the relays. Should be in cooling section. Page E-13

Also did you give direct power to the fan motors to see their still working? Could be a failing motor.

What wire should get 12V on the motor? I'll give that a go. I don't have an FSM, but will do some online searches to get test the relays. Wouldn't a grounded harness result in a blown fuse? Or do you mean a completely separated wire? Appreciate the insights.

Bad relay connections can cause the fans to not come on.

Well let's just say the connectors look like..... Going to file them down and try to salvage them, would love to swap them out with a new pair from a parts car,haven't found one though.

Check your relays under the hood, four of them passenger side wrapped in rubber. There is one that once unwrapped is brown (other three are light blue), that was the one completely fried on mine. if that is the one to help you out part number is H380-61-690A.

Actually mine was a mess. The lower/ smaller two connectors didn't pass a continuity test and my local NAPA had the same part for 17.00. So I'll be swapping that in tomorrow. From the look of the relay, there was a ton of buildup... I'll keep you guys posted if that was the fix.

You were right. The relay was bad. Swapped it out. Hit the AC cuz I was impatient and the fans ran! Got to 86 (where the PFC is set) and they kicked on also. Thanks for the help. PS buy the relay from NAPA people. 17.00 vs 98 OEM.

I know this is an old thread but wanted folks to know that you can still get this part from Napa. It is now $28 and OEM one is like $128 if you can get it. When i called Ray about the OEM Fan Relay he mentioned that he would have to try and order from somewhere out of the states.

Happen to have the NAPA part number by any chance?

Had one of my relays fail recently. From Mazda they're $25 a pop and three of them are the same. Relay #1, the one from this thread was $100 and back ordered through Japan. FWIW, a guy on eBay in the U.K. Has a few new OEM ones for sale for $50 or so. I grabbed one of em.

Which relay is the $100 one? The part diagram I have is showing all 4 to be the same, #C001-67-730. These seem to be selling for around $20-24 online. Thanks.

EDIT: I see the # in the thread, the brown one - H380-61-690A. That one is pricey! Can't seem to find it in the part diagram though.

I also see H450-67-740 as one of the fan control relays, located on the driver's side. About $50 for that one.

The brown one is the h380 part number.

Is that brown relay somewhere in the block of 4 on the pass side fender? The parts book shows all 4 to be the same C001-67-730's.

That is for the fan relay that sits with the other 3 relays under the hood.

That's the one i can get at napa for way cheaper than oem?

And the other 3 are the same for 25 ish each at mazda right ?

ECH AR357 is the relay that you can get from NAPA for around $28. Not sure about the other 3. I would call Ray if you need them.
