Radiator Drain Plug Warped
I was in the middle of a coolant flush while following Rob Robinette's instructions.
Upon putting the radiator drain plug back in place, I overtightened it like an idiot. Now the plastic is warped and I can't unscrew it. On top of that, I had already filled the car up with all distilled water, for the double flush. Right now, I've been burping the system and refilling with coolant. Anybody know a quick and easy method for removing the warped plastic drain plug? In case I need to take it to a shop for removal; how safe is it to drive with such such a low coolant - high water ratio? Also, anybody know the part numbers for the drain plug and the rubber washer? -Thanks in Advance |
water-coolant ratio is perfectly safe as long as the weather isn't cold. Where you are, that might never be a problem.
You might be able to cut a slot into the plug so you can get more torque on it to get it out. You have a stock radiator? If not, now's as good a time as any to put in something not shitty. |
its made of cheap plastic, get a reverse drill out and go real slow, should come out easy. u may want to get 2 new ones, so you can keep a spare around if you open the radiator alot.

Ahhh.. The good ole days.. That acturally happened to me when I first bought my 7 and was doing some maintaince work... I ended up what dgeezaman said.. made a slot with some small knife and screwed it out.. then 4 months later I got an upgraded radiator..
I think you should be fine.. I'm running 80-85% pure water (Triple distilled.. just kidding... lab grade water (MiliQ H2O)). If you do want to change out the coolant.. One of the easiest way is to dis connect the bottom line of AST and suck out the coolant.. I have a vaccume pump that I bought from Griot's Garage and works wonders.. I recently changed out my radiator without lifting the car. You could also gravity drain, using the same AST line... After emptying the radiator.. just add more coolant... remember, you didn't drain all the coolant from the system.. thats usually more time consuming.. Hope this help.. |
Well, here is the link to the pump that I was talking about.. I say this is one of the best investment I've made so far.. As we all know.. changing oil regularly and also the coolant is a must for FD's.. this makes it simple.. I could do both in about 30-1hr. without lifting the car.. Unlike my daily (Acura Legend and most Hondas), the oil filter on FD's are on top.. I think you get my point..

Do you recommend business attire when extracting the liquids, with the liquid extractor, or should I wear my club clothes???
