radiator cap question

I feel dumb asking this question bc i know i've read it somewhere, just can't find the answer anymore...... Why do people change the stock radiator cap to a 16 psi cap? and when should this mod be done? thanks for answering my question in advance :)

Original rad cap pressure WAS 16 lbs from Mazda. After the cooling system recall, they dropped it to 13lbs. The higher pressure allows slightly more efficient cooling (raises the boiling point of the liquid), but at the potential cost to the rest of the system due to fluctuations. Most folk go with the 13lb cap for safety. Besides, if you are relying on three more lbs of pressure to cure your cooling woes, you have more serious problems. 13 lbs and decent radiator, good caps and hoses, 70/30 water coolant mix should perform FINE in all but the worst stop and go. Then the fan mod takes over nicely ;)
