Racing Beat duct and K&N, or other open intake?
 

I hope this topic hasn't been beaten to death. I couldn't find any similar threads. What is the opinion on these two things? I like the idea of having the stock box on for stock looks, but if it is going to be a greater HP gain by putting open intakes like HKS, APEX'i, etc, I'll go that route. Has anyone actually tried both?

IMHO Mazda did a great job on the intake air system; it's a CAI as is. Mazda warns against pulling air from under the hood since it will probably be warmer than with their stock configuration. A better idea might be a more efficient intercooler.

PM a member named "adam c" and ask for his "Cheap Bastard" intake mod for the stock airbox. If your not great a fabbing, it's reasonably priced. And combined with a K & N drop in, it's great at opening up the stock airbox to source ambient air from the nose instead of just scavanging it from the intercooler duct.
It's also invisible when installed. Handy for emissions inpections if that's a concern where you live.

I think I might know what the cheap bastard entails, and I do know how well the stock airbox does for getting cooler air. My ultimate goal is more power, and to assist in the switchover process in the twins. My sequential system works flawlessly, I just wish it pulled as strong during the switchover.

The Racing Beat duct is a piece of junk. Poorly designed and poorly constructed.

I've since changed to a PFS IC and intake, but I recall it improved spool up noticeably when I added Adam's mod.
Now if "switchover" is referring to the 3k. hesitation, it does nothing for that.

No, the switchover I'm referring to is the hesitation around 4 to 4500 rpm. From what I've heard is that is the switching point between the twins. I have a PFS intake on my other FD that I'm selling, it just doesn't sit well with me because it does not filter the air for the air pump, the cat, or the two release valves. Otherwise it seems like a nice unit. Adam C, can you post a link for the C.B. mod for me. I just searched and foinf hundreds of threads not really relating to it at all. Thanks for the responses guys, wish I could get someone to respond to my door lock thread :)

I had the Cheap Bastard intake for awhile and it did an awesome job, probably better that the intake that's on the car now. I had to change because of the intercooler I was putting on. If you plan to keep the stock box and/or have emission Adam's setup is the way to go. If your going to get a wide SMIC (IE M2 Large, Pettit CoolCharge III) then the setup isnt going to work for you.

Get the adam c kit its great!. Add a water/meth kit and be done with it.. Best of all worlds.

the best intake intake for the fd is the stock unit coupled with adams cheap bastard mod.

the stock box has some really good thermal qualities unmatched by any other aftermarket closed box systems. The downside is that it robs air from the ic and this is where adam's mod comes into play. And you get the best of both worlds. I would still have mine but my IC wont allow any room for it.
