Rosie, a 1993 VR base model rx7, 45k miles on original motor, perfect inside & out, was severely injured yesterday at approximately 12:30pm on 295-S in Cherry Hill, NJ.

A dumptruck changed lanes into my rear end today sending me spinning across 295-S in New Jersey, where I met a guard rail at about 60mph.

I left w/ a bloody nose and some burt fingers (airbags), and my passneger walked away scratch free. I'd say we were pretty lucky.

If anyone out there can take a look at the pics and let me know if the car is fixable (not whether the insurance company will total it b/c there are too many variables there) and give an educated guess as to the amount of frame damage (if any) and total damage, I'd appreciate it. Im trying to brace myself for the fact that she might be gone (although the bluebook on that car is 18K much to my surprise) but would like some of the rebuilding experts out there to give me their opinion.

And before anyone asks, NO - I WILL NOT BE SELLING HER BROKEN BODY. or any parts from it.

Vultures.....

:)

Steve

At least your ok man..

pogoism9 05-15-07 02:47 PM

It looks like you shredded the sheetmetal and plastics, but the car (from the pics) doesn't look twisted. You might be ok to fix, though a second opinion is highly recommended.

jrios 05-15-07 02:52 PM

good thing that you were able to walk away safe man...sorry about the car though...listen if you change your mind about parting her out, I'll take the interior parts...again, sorry to hear about your accident, but be thankful you're still breathing

revsteve 05-15-07 02:52 PM

2nd opinion please (although i like his) :)

MADDSLOW 05-15-07 02:58 PM

That car will be totaled, I'd bet everything I have on it. When my car got hit in the front, it looked like it would take maybe a grand to fix. The insurance company wanted to total it, I had to convince them not to include some parts on the form so it wouldn't reach "totaled" status. Parts for these cars are so expensive from Mazda, so they total very easily... just a hood counts as $1000.

fix it man, if you really love the car...fix it. It might take some time but look at it as a chance to get a cool body kit or something.

slo 05-15-07 03:06 PM

Fixable yes, defanatly needs to go to a frame shop to be checked/maybee stretched back to strait.

Ins company will total it, oh yes. My guess they will estimate 8-10K in damage.

preludesh2000 05-15-07 03:11 PM

not sure ...but with that much body damage ...looks like a loss...if the frame is cracked or twisted ...might as well forget about it....
if its totaled out buy it back from the insurance company...
atleast you walked away....damn truck driver was jealous....
i would fix it....

Insurance company will definitely total it! The body work alone will be over 8k! (rear quarter looks bad and seems to have good bit of structural damage).

I'm sure they will give you an option to buy her back, but I personally don't think its worth fixing.. better take that money, buy the car back, then buy another FD and swap all the goodies and junk and sell rest of it!

Fd3BOOST 05-15-07 03:23 PM

Diddo to Herblenny.

Sorry to hear it Steve.

VegasFD 05-15-07 03:33 PM

Definately totaled. Sorry man.

revsteve 05-15-07 03:39 PM

Thanks Dave - I'm sorry too.

Well i'll keep everyone posted on the outcome. 8-10k of damage shouldnt total the car if it books at 18, but we'll see what happens (it should need about 15 to total it).

Anyone got a hood and a few panels they want to sell me? :)

Sorry to hear your loss, amazing this happened only a few miles from where I work.

Don’t give up hope, insurance pays out well, and the buy back is usually pretty cheap. Take the money, strip yours of what you want then buy another and have spares…

This was one of my FD’s last feb, the sig shows her as of Sunday

Glad you made it out basically unhurt. I know you want to fix the car however, please keep this in mind, any good body person will tell you that even if the car is repaired body panel-wise the over all structure of the car (frame) may never be the same. You would know this by putting it up on an alignment machine.

My advise to you before you go any further with this is to have a body shop put it on a alignment rack or a frame machine and see if the frame and or the suspension componants are damaged. Trust me i know you want the car back to like it was before but please review all of you options. Another person you should talk to on this forum is TurboJeff PM him. He has a lot of experience with FD body work.

Thanks Marc -

He's the one I was hoping would respond :)

He's done pretty amazing things with these cars and would probably have the best idea.

I assume the insurance companies will put it on a frame machine to check out damage before deciding whether or not to total it.

Keep the input coming although most of you have given up hope :)

rx7rcer09 05-15-07 04:01 PM

good thing you ok i say make the dump truck company pay to fix it dont let it go to waste and if you decide to sell it pm me but i hope you fix it

crcleofdst 05-15-07 04:21 PM

hey dude,

I'm no expert, but it looks fixable to me. Probably expensive though.....

good luck

capndan 05-15-07 05:05 PM

sorry about your car, its good that you are ok. I'm going to guess your insurance is going to say its totaled. she dose look fixable if you are willing to put some time and money into it. thats just my opinion and i am no expert :(.

preludesh2000 05-15-07 05:13 PM

its also really not your insurance company fixing it....it should be the dump truck guys, or his company's insurance..

brad

revsteve 05-15-07 05:42 PM

It is the dump trucks insurance company (at least thats the unofficial word) paying for it. He pulled over and admitted fault from what I hear. I'll know more when the police report is filed on Monday next week.

I have my insurance company to keep theirs in check - so hopefully i'll get a decent offer for the car if they don't fix it.

Anyone got a sub 45k all original FD I can take off your hands?

Hey Crcle - thanks for the kind words :) I agree. I think she'll pull through (but thats like saying a brain cancer patient in their last days will pull through - just sheer baseless optimism).

Turbojeff - if you're out there take a look at the pics and let me know your thoughts.

**Random thought** boy am I glad my PM box is full or i'd have 50 offers for the carcass :)

cld1000 05-15-07 05:51 PM

dude your obviously totally hooked on FDs, something good will come of all this, your too optimistic for your run in the FD game to come to an early end. rebuild her!!

Gadd 05-15-07 06:33 PM

It's a good thing no one was hurt.

Anything is fixable. But in my opinion, it's not worth it. The left shock tower is bent and there is frame damage below it.

Cgotto6 05-15-07 06:53 PM

Guaranteed totaled. your gonna run into so many problems up front with your engine cradle/suspension. Just part it out and make some cash. Thats what I did just under a year ago, and I made $12,000 about. So that plus the insurance money should get you a sweet new ride...Good luck
