quick mod question

this weekend i am getting an HKS intake, a bonez 3" downpipe, and a powerFC. i have done some search in this forum and found people saying that with these mods (btw: the only other mods that i have is ACT street/strip clutch, 9.5 pound flywheel, and HKS superdragger catback) i don't need to upgrade my fuel pump. on the other hand, i have heard some people say that i should.

so, what should i do? i am running into $$ problems and upgrading a fuel pump seems out of reach. but if its essential then i could dig into my savings. (how much will a fuel pump with installation cost me?)

so, is a better fuel pump essential? without it, do i run into the chance of hurting the engine? will i be running lean at most times?

some one help. thanks!

if i read right (intake, DP, Catback) then you should be ok, just dunna go crazy with boost!

here's a different fuel question for everyone:
Which is a bigger limiting factor: injectory or pump?

to redrotaryrocket8...i wouldn't sweat it too much, there's guys with way more mods than you runnin the stock fuel system. just keep the fuel filter fresh!

thanks airborne.

the answer to your question should be logical. the fuel pump should be the bigger limiting factor to a certain level of mods. i can say this because guys when they start moding up and see their car running lean upgrade the fuel pump and the air/fuel ratio gets fixed by that upgrade. so initially its the pump. but after considerable number of mods and an adequate fuel pump, it should be the injectory which is the bottle neck.

Stick to 12psi or less, which you should do with the stock intercooler anyway. Once you start running over 12psi, you will need a fuel pump and will be getting close to the limits of the stock injectors.

BTW, if you can't afford the $250 to buy a fuel pump, you probably shouldn't be modding. Not flaming you, just stating a fact. Also, the HKS intake uses a shitty foam filter. Not good. Ask several people here who have used them (Johnny comes to mind). You are better off with the poor man's cold air box mod or getting the Apexi intake.

whats the poor mans air box mod?

redrotaryrock8 May 6, 2002 01:11 PM

rynberg: thanks for the info. just a few questions for you. how does having a shitty foam on the intake hurt the performance/life of the car? i am asking because i am getting a used hks intake and a used downpipe for $400. so the intake is costing me around 150-200 bucks compared to 300 bucks original. is HKS still better than the poor mans air box (for rx7streetkid: its simply K&N filters in the airbox).

Take that $200 you are spending on the used intake and buy a NEW Apexi intake.. much better filtering.

mjw: a NEW apexi intake for an FD retails for 398 dollars which is 198 dollars more than what i can get the HKS for.

Red look up and to the left. You will see the rx7 store. the apexi is going for 215 bucks. I snatched one up!

mjw May 6, 2002 02:03 PM

Retail pricing never reflects what products are actually selling for, retail prices for aftermarket products are almost always alot higher. Click the link above, you can get the Apexi intake new for $215. I would strongly recommend against the HKS intake, they are consistenly the worst rated filter on multiple tests. The Apexi intake is not the only intake that is good, but for the price I think it is the best option.

I switched my HKS mega flow for an apexi power intake.
The HKS system is the worst piece of crap I have ever seen!!!

Filtration is simply Nul!!

Go Apex!

is HKS still better than the poor mans air box (for rx7streetkid: its simply K&N filters in the airbox).

Foam filters are considered the worst in filtration. Foams are not dense enough to trap debris and dirt. Debris and dirt in engine and turbo isn't good. It is very non-restrictive so you'll get good airflow, but at a cost.

Poor man air box mod is cutting holes at the stock air box's bottom and routing some hoses to the nose for more air. This is in addition to a K&N drop-in filter.

Keep learning more about the car. There are tons of sites that explain mods, repairs. Do a search on google or this site to get some good links.
