Question about the 12v relay fix for EGR
 

Currently my ECU is throwing code 16. I removed the EGR, cleaned it and gave it a new gasket. While it was out I tested it and it functions perfectly. I believe now it is the sensor that is malfunctioning.

After reading the threads out there about this easy fix for a malfunctioning EGR sensor I am a little confused. Where do you insert the 12v relay in this line?

(EGR)====(blue connector)====(ECU)

I think its supposed to be:

(EGR)=l (relay)===(blue connector)====(ECU)

but I want to be sure before I cut the wires. Plus another thread mentions something about the solenoid for the EGR. What need to be done there if anything?

Well after looking around and rereading the posts I think I've atleast figured out the wiring. If you read the first link and follow the diagram at this link:

It becomes pretty clear, however, input from someone who has done this mod already would be good.

Ahhh... that clears everything up. I really appreciate the info. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to wire anything to the solenoid or if that was only if I was elimating the EGR completely.

The diagram spooledup7 clearly shows how everything is wired. I will be finishing my relay fix soon. Let me know if you need any help or pics.

Found out this thread was going into the FAQs so I decided to add some pics to clear up any misconceptions about this easy fix for a faulty EGR.

Here is a pic where I tapped into the solenoid harness under the intake manifold:

I already had some of those wire covering tubes running on the firewall from the fan switch mod so I just ran the wiring there:

I zip tied the relay to the fan relays on the front passenger side of the engine bay. Keeping this relay away from the engine heat is important since the max operating temp is ~160 F. I have a Feed headlight cover so this area of the engine bay is perfect.

The relay wiring is as follows: The red wires are from the solenoid and are plugged into the voltage inputs. I crimped male spade plugs to the wire and plugged it directly into the solenoid harness. The green and black are from the harness off the EGR sensor. I cut between the EGR and the harness and then extended the wiring (see spooledup7's diagram). I then connected these to the two poles that have continuous contact between eachother. Most relays have a picture on the packaging showing what individual plugs do.

The diagram is a little confusing where it shows the volt/no volt symbol. To clear it up, the volt/no volt symbol describes the state of the poles when power is applied. In other words, no power, and the switch is resting ON. Add power and the siwtch is OFF. Why? because when the EGR is closed, there is continuity, and when it is open, there is not.

The power is coming from the ECU.

what wires go to what pin number on the relay?? the pic is great but doesnt label the pin locations

If you read all the links where spooledup7 explains the wiring then look at the picture that he drew in this thread everything will make sense.

I have been rebuilding my engine, and I took a few shots of my wire harness with the EGR cure 12 volt relay. I hope this clears things up for those that have questions.
