question....

i just bought a new battery....my lights turn on, everything works but it doesnt wanna start....would that be my starter and not my alternator?? or is it my alternator?

SlingShotRX7 Oct 3, 2006 10:31 PM

Does it turn??

Make sure the connection to the negative post is very tight. A slighty loose connection will cause all accessories to work, yet the car won't turn over.

Sometimes you run into brand new batteries that are dead as can be off the shelves. When you turn the key to the start position, does it just click rapidly? If so, you probably don't have enough juice to turn it over and need to charge the battery on a slow 12v charge overnight.

well it doesnt even click over, it just goes "click" thats it. well ill check the negative on the battery and ill get back to u guys. thanks again.

okay, so it doesnt turn and i did try checking the negative post, its on as tight as possible and its still not starting but all the accessories still work, could it be my starter?? where is the starter located anyways cause it took me forever to find it and i still havent found it. thanks.

It's on the driver's side, underneath the car. I believe it has two wires running to it. It's right there, in front of you if you look underneath it. I believe it's bolted to bell housing on the transmission.

What was the reason for buying the new battery?Did it do the same thing with the old battery? If so then it probably is your starter.I would really check the grounds, both connections to the battery and the alternator connection(very unlikely culprit). Was the alternator sounding strained with the old battery?Slow cranking?

You have the same symptoms i had.
I even bought a new battery and same problem.
THought it was my clutch switch. IT wasn't.

It was my starter.

And its one of the easiest jobs to do..

Look under the car, on the battery side.

Its kind of hard to explain with words whatthe starter looks like.
Just order it, and when you get it.. You';ll be like OOOKKAYYY i see..

disconnect 2 wires.. and 2 bolts. <-- really easy to get to..
starter comes right out, and pop the new one in.. and DONE>.

Call Malloy Mazda in Woodbridge VA.. refurbish starter is 108 + your core..

goodluck

oh yea. Check your clutch switch.. Just in case..

Look under your clutch pedal. THere is a plastic stick that goes in and out of a plastic
box thingie.. Follow the wire and disconnect. Then jump it with a paper clip (wire side,
not the switch side)

while your at its adjust yoru clutch pedal if need be..

check out this web page.. very helpful..

Don't buy a new starter...just take it to an auto electric shop and have them rebuild it. If it's just brushes, it will probaby cost less than 60 bucks if you take it to them.

New starters are usually just rebuilt ones anyway.

st8uphiphop Oct 4, 2006 10:30 PM

right on guys, i appreciate the tips and everything you've told me. thanks and God bless all.

you can normally get a rebuilt starter for that cost. You just have to take back your old one and they refund you half the money thus, giving you a final price of about $75-$80
