puzzled by fuel pumps
 

ok its time to pick a fuel pump, and i need to decide which to get. looking at rx7store.net website i cant tell the difference between the Cosmo pump and the nipondenso pump... its my understanding that both are made by nipondenso, and that they are the same size/shape. ok questions

1. is the pump that everyone calls the "supra pump" the nipondenso one?

2. the descriptions on the rx7store.net website are the same for both pumps???? whats the difference?

3. im not sure what pump would be best suited for my application (20b, running stock at first, then upping the power)

any input would be super

Denso (they dropped the "Nippon" part of their name) makes many different pumps, including the Supra, Cosmo, and stock FD pumps.

I know that doesn't directly answer any of your questions, but I hope that more folks will post. You can search this site to get info about each pump.

hey i have the "supra pump" nippondenso, go to supraforums.com or any supra site and buy a TT supra fuel pump, its a lot cheaper than any store, i picked mine up for $70 and it works perfect.

ok so the supra pump is NOT the one listed as "nippondenso" on rx7store? i wish they would do a little better job of explaining their products.... there are many things like this such as the act clutches which have the same description for 2 different products... its frustrating

well, i could search and sift through endless pages of opinions, but does anyone have performance data to compare the available pumps for the FD? ill do a search now, but if anyone else wants to comment that would be great

i was considering the cosmo pump for the 20b... but i dont know how that is supposed to compare to the supra one

i spent alot of time considering fuel pumps. i found max cooper's site to be one of the most insightful. one of the keys is that different pumps delivery differing volumes as the psi increases. in other words 2 pumps may deliver the same volume at 40 psi but much different volumes at 60 psi. remember fuel pumps are asked to deliver increasing fuel pressure with increasing boost levels. and you thought it was going to be easy...:). anyway, i found what i think is a great solution for fuel delivery. the bottom line is that when you are putting out an honest 400+ rwhp fuel delivery w the cosmo, denso pump starts to be a concern. then you get into really higher dollar, harder to mount pumps that generally pump more fuel than needed all the time. this constantly recycles gas back and forth from the tank to the motor heating the gas. hot gas, like hot air is less powerful. ( of course better hotter gas than no gas.) i chose another option. i run a Kenne Bell Boost A Pump (BAP) along w my cosmo pump. the BAP, upon sensing boost, ups the voltage to my fuel pump. zero to 50% gain on the voltage, adj at the twist of the dial. Kenne Bell has been making them for 20 years, they are beautifully built, relatively easy to install and are $200. i believe MSD also makes a model. Kenne Bell has a great website that explains it all in detail. fuel solution? a cosmo pump and a BAP. end of story.

If you want to make an honest 400rwhp a single $100 Walbro is more than sufficient. If you want to make a honest 650rwhp then 2 Walbros for $200 is sufficient.

I went with the "supra" pump at the RX7 store. It was an exact fit replacement for the stock pump. In addition, I felt that it would be more reliable, and not make noise like some of the others. If I recall correctly, it should be good to 500hp. Don't quote me on that.

Installation was fairly simple. A tip: Put a small vice grip on the fuel line to clamp it closed before removing it from the pump. This will keep gas from flowing out. The return line won't have gas in it.

that definatly sounds like a good option as i can add that when i start to pass 400HP... for now the 20b is going in stock so i will be fine with that. my only concern with upping the voltage would be burning out the pump as it most likey was not designed to take that amount of power. besides that it sounds like a good solution... id just be worried that the pump would fail

the idea of running 2 pumps in parallel doesnt sit well with me for some reason... id rather have one do-it-all pump...


also can Jason or anyone explain the difference between the 2 pumps made by denso on rx7store.net (cosmo, and nipondenso) because they have a aifference of $70 but the description is the EXACT SAME

The nippondenso is the supra pump. I dont know the difference between that and the cosmo. They both look the same and could be the same pump but I have not compared the serial numbers.
I rarely sell the cosmo and sell about 10 of the nippondenso a week, if that helps. :)

so jason, how would i know if im getting the cosmo one or not? and why is it $70 more? if there is no difference between the 2 pumps why do you sell both? i like to know exactly what im buying when i buy something, so i hope that the sellers know a little more than me :wink: ...so your saying you dont know the difference? im not sure that im too confident buying things based on your descriptions anymore (im having the same problem with some of the ACT clutches ...last i checked you had the same descriptin for 2 different clutches w/ 2 different prices) -heath

I had hks racing pump in godzilla and plan to put the same in the new car.. Expensive but I dont have to worry about hte pump giving up enough fuel ;)

He's not putting a T78 in either... or at least not at first...

As far as the ACT clutches go, there's 4 and 6 Puck... Harsh, and street strip (what most people who drive in traffic use). Then The pressure plate, Theres 3 Flavors..
Extreme, Extreme Advance or someting and Insane... :D
Either way, they go something like up to 400hp, Up to 600, and up to 800.

Call SR Motorsports, they cut me a deal after talking with them @ Sevenstock, and I'm happy... :D And They're in your neck of the woods :D, get the info you want then, buy from the cheapest place... (Sorry Jason, hope you're that place ;) ) :D

If you get the cosmo it comes in a Mazda box. If you get the nippondenso its in a Toyota box. I will tell you to go with the nippondenso and dont waste the money on the cosmo.

ok, does ANYONE know ANYTHING about the cosmo pump in relation to other pumps?

ok i read the whole thing and then there was a big disclamer to disregard any info about the cosmo pump... i going to assume that the other individuals who have purchaced this pump do not know anything about its performance abilities untill i hear otherwise

to anyone who bought the cosmo pump what prompted you to buy it as opposed to the "supra" pump? it worries me when people use parts that no one really knows what it actually does

also, (but if people dont know anything about the cosmo pump whatsoever its unlikely they will know this either) is the same pump used in the cosmo for the 20b and the 13b?
