pull to the right

my car has a slight pull to the right, especially speeds of 80mph+. i've gotten it aligned, the tires are brand new. what else could it be? just something wrong with steering? bc i can see it tilt to the right a little at high speeds. thanks.

Check your tire pressure.

this may be weird but if you have a front spolier, check the screws that hold it in, if the right side is loose causing the spoiler to point more downwards and apply more downforce to the side, then that could cause it. only thing i could think of that would be speed dependent

you said aligned...but that has nothing to do with balancing of the wheels itself...only other thing I can think of

ttb Dec 25, 2002 07:14 PM

this pull happened with my previous set of wheels/tires also, that's why i don't think it has to do with the wheels/tires...doing 80pmh i can literally see the steering wheel turn to the right a little...could it just be something in the steering mechanism?

I have the exact same problem...steering wheel displaces slightly to the right if you let it go in the highway..Ill try to get an alignment on Friday.

Did you install the tires yourself? A couple of years ago I bought new tires (Dunlop 5000's) from NTB. Got the car back and started driving it. The car pulled very hard to the right. Much worse than you are describing. I figured they somehow screwed up the alignment or something. After many return trips, the idiots finally realized they put a different size tire on the right side from the left side. I never even thought to check that, I mean putting on tires isn't rocket science. I don't think this sounds like the same thing that is happening to you, but its another thing for you to check. Even if they are the same size, you might want to swap them and see if it pulls in the other direction. Could be something wrong with the tires.
Good luck,
Matt

Do you know the spec. of the finished alignment (camber and caster of both sides) also try swaping the front wheels (side to side) and check the front and rear suspension for any looseness.

one of your wheels could be bent also, have you checked the inside of the wheels?

Turbonut Dec 26, 2002 09:47 AM

As long as car was never in an accident, I have seen alignments done with equipment that the shop feels is in specs, however, even though the readings appear as within tolerance, the camber is out on one wheel. Check the tires closely, especially the right front for any sign of wear on the outside. One experience-I had a Buick, and Cadillac aligned by the same people. A little while late both experienced wear on left front outside. Took if back, but it on rack, and read perfect. Went to another shop and camber was way out on left side. I've also seen cars that wheelbase (measurement from center of front wheel to center of rear wheel) differs from one side to another, indicating a front wheel trailing, causing a pull.

thanks for the inputs...will try them when I get back from LA.

ACTION RT Dec 26, 2002 04:07 PM

check the ball joints..if there bent a mm or 2 then it will pull..

my beater had the same problem, i guess the ball joint was bent a tiny bit so it pulled a bit to the right at any speed.. then I hit a curb yesterday in it, and bent the ball joint up even more :) it pulled like a bitch to the right

so i went and got a ball joint from mazda for $78CAD with tax, my dad put it on.. and now it doesn't pull anymore.. i need to get an alignment tommorow though to make it "accurate"

rx7racer11 Dec 26, 2002 04:27 PM

i had similar problem... mine slightly pulled it was aligned and everything.. turned out my control arm was bent ever so slightly ..

GoRacer Dec 26, 2002 05:39 PM

Mine has a slight constant pull but really more noticable the faster you go. I've had it aligned several times and have had several race shops look at it and they all tell me there is no pull and it's perfect, wtf? ...Bullships!!! If you hold the wheel with the lazy two finger left hand on your left leg grip, you can feel the pull. If you hold it with your whole hand or both, you can't. If you let go it slowly tries to make a right hand turn.

I bet it's a slight bend in either the control arm or ball joint that can't be seen by the eye but aren't there machines to test that?

Oh and I was told to have a race shop do the alignment and not a tire store.

ttb Dec 26, 2002 06:27 PM

well i feel better that i'm not the only one...normal driving you can't really tell...it's only when you're going fast and you let go of the steering does it show. oh well.
