problem at idle

Got a problem at Idle. All of a sudden two days ago the car seemed
to be missing and holding back. Had the leads and plugs changed...
(even though I paid a rx7 specialist to change the plugs whilst I
was on holiday..only to find out today that they had not been
changed at all!!!!!) Not "F" ing happy I can tell you)..quite a bit
better but now I have an irregular lump at the bottom end. Idle goes
from 750 to 1000rpm in milliseconds every ten seconds or so.....When
driving lets say for example at 2k you can see the tacho jump from 2
to 2.5 k but with no increse in engine speed:confused:

Anybody had a problem similar?

Thinking it might be a dodgy earth....could this cause it?

P.S no loss in power at all and no smoke or loss of collant.

P.P.S Not sure if its the map coz when the irregularity occurs ( ie
jumps) so does the injector duty.

Am I right in thinking that the ECU is telling the car it needs more
fuel hence the jump in RPM

HELP!

Possibly a leaky LIM gasket...

the TPS needs adjustment. had the same problem befor.. pay attention when the tach needle start faltuatin and c if the exhaust has heavy smoke while doin that.

dont get any some when it happens......do you think it could still be the tps screw?

is that how it idles also? or do the rpm actually change?

elnr 01-15-04 03:34 AM

when idling it jumps from 650 to 900 constantly....However i did notice that the idle does improve when i switch the lights on.

Correlate all E/L (electrical load) state triggers against possible idle issues.

Do you have the FSM?

elnr 01-15-04 04:20 AM

Clanyne,

I have a PFC and commander.

What is FSM and how would i correlate all electrical load values....make them all the same value???

Thanks

i'm having similer situation. mine idles 1500rpm, if i turn on parking lights, it drops to 1200 rpm, it usally idles 700rpm.

TTBullet 01-15-04 08:34 AM

i also have PFC, what is FSM?

Str8Down 01-15-04 08:51 AM

My idle also varies quite a bit. Anywhere from 500 to 1000.

Think the problem is linked to a leaky LIM gasket.....put the old ECU back on and the idle evened out after some time.

Aparrently the standard ECU compensates more for air leaks than a PFC...unfortunately its a turbos out job.....not looking forward to the labour bill:eek:

My mate has a standard one and he has the same problem.

FSM= Factory Service Manual

Thanks Kento...think your right about the LIM gasket.......do you know what happens to your car if you have a bad earth?

Kento 01-15-04 11:20 AM

Various electrical issues will pop up, and I think more than just a fluctuating idle.

I've never tried it before on an FD, but if there's a way you can spray some contact cleaner down by the LIM (tough, I'd imagine, with all that stuff clustered around it) while idling to see if it changes the behavior any, that might narrow it down.

elnr 01-15-04 11:43 AM

Does anybody have a picture of where the LIM gasket is coz I cant find it.

mad_7tist 01-15-04 11:59 AM

ok you can spary carb cleaner inbetween the lim and the block to see if it is leaking. if you have a pfc and the idle is erratic and changes with electrical load you are have a e/l and idle fuel problem one thing i know is too add fuel to the blocks all around the 4 across 5 down , i think that is the right on, this block 4,5 should be the stable idle. adding fuel to the surrounding blocks should help it stabilize in the one block. assuming you dont have an air leak

mad_7tist 01-15-04 12:02 PM

here is one. you can see the exhaust gaskets also

elnr 01-15-04 12:06 PM

Thanks....incedently...how many are there...You pointed out one which is by the bulkhead.

elnr 01-15-04 12:07 PM

Also I wouldn't say it changes more than it stabelizes at bit better.

mad_7tist 01-15-04 12:12 PM

lim is one multi layered gasket. all one piece. uim-lim is one piece exhaust is 2 seperates. i thought that some people were using 1 piece exhaust gaskets form another year but i may be wrong. anyone know?

TTBullet 01-15-04 02:42 PM

mad_7tist,

ok, then why the rpm goes up and down when i use parking lights switch?

elnr 02-01-04 09:34 AM

Changed plugs, leads, earth, Tested Compression, Aparrently I have a metal LIM gasket and once changed these don't blow...........but still doing it..............HHHHHHEEEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP!:mad :
