Pre-Built Engine?

Couple quick questions.

1) Can anyone recommend where to buy a pre-built 13b-rew? Basically, I want something that has all gaskets / seals replaced, street ported (maybe more aggressive), and is ready to drop in. I would need a full set-up with tranny, ecu, wiring harness.

Am I better off buying from say a Tiger Japanese and then sending it somewhere for rebuild?

2) Anyone ever dropped one in an RX-4?I would assume the actual engine removal / replace should be straight-forward since it's a 13b in there now. I was thinking of just replacing the entire wiring harness so I can revert it back to stock should I ever choose to sell it. Obviously the harness would be a bit different between a carbed 13b and an EFI, twin-turbo REW.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I guess you need to look at the NICE thread about Tiger Japanese in the BAD business Section.
I have a Coffee table that you can install in your engine bay..at least that would work better than the T-J Engine would.
Engine swaps of another series are usually not straight forward.
Even Carb to EFI is a big move.

pretty sure you not gonna be able to "drop" an rew in there because the rew is the only 13b with engine mounting on the rear iron, probably gonna be a lot easier for you to do a 13b-RE in there. Obviously you'd have to get some kind of ecu /wiring harness upgrade.

If you need EVERYTHING, you're better off buying a JDM longblock off Ebay. That way you can get the whole thing with all the parts. Consider the engine a core engine, you will need to get it rebuilt, but you'll have all the manifolds, wiring, sensors, etc. that are a pain in the ass to put all together.

JDM longblocks go for around $1800-2000 or so with trans, harness, ECU, everything. If you're in Kentucky, I'd recommend Kevin Landers at Rotary Resurrection to rebuild the motor, he does a good job for a fair price.

Thanks guys. I have no idea why this isn't updating me properly that there are new posts!!

@Dale: Rotary Resurrection was actually who I had in mind if I took that route.

@Bryan: I have only had my FD for < 2 years and it is my first rotary. I was not aware of the difference in mounting position. Thanks for the info! I probably need to do more research on all the variances....

If I understand correctly, the -RE use a 9:1 compression rotor vs the 8.5:1 for the REW, correct? I guess I should do some research on all the variances. I'm not opposed to an FC motor if I can still pull the performance out of it.

I have every intention of putting in a new wiring harness and ECU. My goal is to be able to swap back in the original motor, if necessary, when and if I ever decide to sell it. I considered just building the carbureuted motor but I haven't 100% decided yet.

These cars are just so rare that they're often more desirable un-modified. I could just say screw it, build it for me and not worry about future sales....

It's looking like a GSL-SE or even a Turbo II might be a good start. The GSL-SE has the front suspension that would swap onto this car too.... I need to find a cheap donor car I'm thinking...

If I'm not mistaken, the 13B-RE he speaks of is from the JDM Cosmos, not the 13BT from the FC.

But looks like you've found a different route. If you're putting a 13B in an RX-4 (does it not have a 13B in it already? Or do you just want the EFI?) than a GSL-SE might be easiest, but a FC NA will be easier to find in decent shape.

It is a 13b carb'd. I was reading a build thread on this forum with a guy that had a 74 RX4 that he put a T II in. I need to get the freaking thing in my garage first! lol
