Power difference btwn NEW stock precat and DP
Can you really tell the difference in power? Is it only mid-hi range power gain?
I am spending $1400 on repairs already so it's rocketing me to the poor house. I will have the precat off but is another $300 really worth the 15 hp? How noticeable is it if you drive pretty slow (say revving to 3-4k rpm only)? My precat is not clogged - I can't even feel the heat from the inside transmission tunnel. So, basically, the $300 is just for performance, not reliability. |
In my opinion, it is definitely a reliability mod. My underhood temps were significantly lower when I got mine and I don't believe my precat was clogged either. The precat is restrictive though, regardless if it is clogged. On top of the reliability issue and adding more hp the dp also aids in spooling the turbos much quicker so boost comes online sooner. Plus the sound difference is amazing, being able to hear those puppies buzzing and spinning is awesome. IMO, it is definitely one of the best mods I have done.

With my not-clogged pre-cat, after driving normally (Florida summertime) it burned my hand just touching the prop rod. After installing the DP I can put my hand on the extension manifold after a hard run with out getting burned. Get the downpipe...Now

Actually a DP should be the very first mod you do on your car. As posted above, it significantly lower underhood temps and puts much less stress and heat on the turbos adding life to both them and the engine. it puts out about 15 rwhp and it will sound deeper. Get an exhaust and you'll have about 25-30 rwhp with the 2 combined. yes, it is definitely worth it. Precats suck.

I put one on my rx. It allows the turbo to spool faster giving more power. I noticed a huge power gain with my dp, cat back, and intake.

My car is all stock right now and the $1400 is spent on repair. Oh, previous owner did the vac hose so that's done. I'll have to scale back my lifestyle to save up the extra $300 then... |
Makes it more rev-happy like a lightened flywheel too. You wont be disappointed, trust us.. ;)

Well, low end power is lowered, of course, b/c of the quicker spool up.

Something someone said in another message thread really cracked me up... They referred to the precat as a "nuclear reactor". ;)
When I had mine, I would notice quite a bit of heat at the floor foot area when driving. That heat was signifigantly reduced with the DP. I'm not sure of the gain I got from the DP since I replaced the precat, cat, and catback all at the same time. ;) I agree with the others, it's a must if you have the available money. |

DP is a great mod!! your turbos will spool quicker and louder. I highly suggest you invest in one maybe with a midpipe too. :)

Heh, the pre-cat was known as a "thermal reactor" or "monolithic converter" on earlier rotaries.

A glowing hot pre-cat against your turbos can't be good...Huge difference in underhood temps...Increased HP... the sound of the turbos spooling...

Yes, you can really tell the diference and power will be increased across the entire range not to mention the improved throttle response. On a per$$$ basis, its one of the best/cheapest mods you can do. Just look at all the people who love their DP :)

Like the scudinearia site says, its a a mod you can get by the wife. If you have one, chances are she won't even be able to tell a difference in noise. But you can hear the turbo spool a little. Its not loud, just noticable. I also agree, it should be the first mod. CJ

Cal emissions don't test cold-start. If heated up you should pass on the dyno with stock cat/ECU. It's the visual flashlight inspection(if any) that can hose you, but the under-hood emissions label makes no mention of a pre-cat.

Yeah, most smog places don't know any better. If they can get the machine hooked up and running and you pass, they don't care. They just wanna go onto the next car. Has anyone failed the visual? Does that mean you can just try another shop or gotta change the precat backon and get inspected by the state?
