Is it possible to move the wastegate rod that goes to the actuator?

Just wondering if I should be able to move that rod that goes from the actual wastegate to the actuator while the car is off. Also, should I be able to see inside the actuator from the rod side?

XSTransAm 09-12-04 08:41 PM

yeah its just a spring with a diaphram

Gamezilla 09-12-04 08:50 PM

Wait, so I should be able to move that shaft back and forth and open the wastegate manualy while the car is off? I tried to move mine and it was impossible to move. Stuck in that position.

you'll need a fair bit of force to move it especially if you trying to move the rod with the engine still in the car. you should be able to move it a little using some long nose pliers

no. it is frozen solid. i grabbed it from underneath the car (where I had more room to tug on it) with some pliers and really yanked on it. It started to actually make the actuator flex under the pressure. It wont move at ALL.

that's interesting. i suspect i have similar problem.

ah you getting a large boost spike (stuck closed), barely any boost (stuck open) or somewhere inbetween?

Gamezilla 09-12-04 09:58 PM

I cant built past .5bars of boost.

hows the spool up of the primary turbo? if it's quite slow (meaning the wastegate flap could be slightly ajar), you maybe onto something. though i've never heard of the wastgate getting stuck. unless it has been adjusted wrong...

Car is non-sequential. Builds boost up until .4bars, then if I go WOT I can get it to tape .5bars. Thats it. Felt almost like a boost leak, but I checked everything a million times over. Vacuum lines, connections, etc. Im stumped. I tried to move the rod and it wouldnt budge in either direction. The angle of the rod and wastegate flapper are acute (less than 90 degrees). Is that open? What should it be?

Oh ya - the wastegate is ported. And there were a couple cracks in the housing when the turbos were put in, but it wasnt anything crazy.

If you're only making 0.5 bar (7 psi), the wastegate is stuck open. It sounds like you need a new wastegate actuator.

Gamezilla 09-13-04 06:13 PM

I got under the car with some pliers. Wouldnt budge at all. Didnt matter what direction.

If you want to verify absolutely what the wastegate actuator is doing then remove the vac lines, plug one and to the other hook up a hand pump so you can so if the actuator does in fact function correctly.

I'll try this tomorrow. Thanks.
