Possbily bad Hatch glass seal??
Can you guys help identify if I have a bad glass seal on a 93 rx7.
After a heavy downpour, I raise the hatch and notice water pouring out from where the dampers are mounted. I researched and found out that the most common cause is the foam gasket behind the taillights, so I've sealed it up. It's been raining stupid hard again a week later so I went to check. The new seal I put in are working but I'm still getting water in the spare tire area. I removed the plastic trim and noticed water building up like in the last picture. This could explain rust in certain areas. Most likely it's the spoiler gasket. I've seen them leak before, not uncommon. Especially since it looks like you have an aftermarket spoiler.
The rubber weatherstripping around the hatch would have to be REALLY shot and obviously faulty to leak inside. Tail light gasket has nothing to do with water in the hatch, that's too low. Dale |
Dale, I think he said he was suspecting the seal of the hatch glass to the hatch - IMO, that could be the issue. I've had water drain out (outside of hatch) from around that seal after washing the car and raising the hatch, but it has never caused any issues inside the car.

^DaveW, I think what you're describing is water that simply accumulates in the glass channel. It's outside the seal, but under the molding. In the OP's case, I'd suspect the spoiler mounts as well.

Regardless, it’s reasuring I’m probably not the only one cussing the water that drools out from under the hatch window molding even after drying the car an hour earlier. |
^Yep. Once I get the car 99% dry I pop the hatch and get that "drool" water as well as the water in the drip rail around the hatch.

I’m getting water into my hatch as well. But I think mine is because of a crappy paint repair/mask job which dried out the weatherstrip and it cracked unfortunately. Are these available? I tried locating one but no luck. Thanks |
They may be available new, but they don't typically get too messed up so they should be easy/cheap to get used as well.

Dale I took your advice and purchase some spoiler gasket and I'm waiting for them to come in, install, and wait to see if that actually resolve my issue. First time owning an older car and I've never even heard of spoiler gasket so it never crossed my mind that was the issue. These gasket we're cheap enough to order at 11 a piece. After several hours of heavy downpour, I found that the spoiler gasket resolved the issue. I no longer have any water leaks coming into the hatch now.

The OCD in me would want to do something about that scale inside the hatch. Maybe clean the loose stuff up and some POR15 ? |
Yeah, if you have some rust going on in there it should be treated and sealed.
