Porting how far is to far
 

I was porting my intake and was wondering how much you can take off of the rotor oil ring edge. When you are blending that lip you have to take a little bit off and i have herd all sorts of things about having the oil overlap into your ports. So i basically probly took off less than a 1/64. I took calipers and measured from the outside of the oil ring wear pattern and it is like right on the outside edge. So will i be all right as long as the inside edge of the outside oil ring stays out of the port???? Hope this is not to confusing i just am afraid to put it all together and have a damn oil leak.

If you angle your grinding bit you should not have had to take any off of the actual edge of the port to remove the casting . Post some detailed pics of the port work.

I will post some pics tonight, i tried to angle it like that but it still had a nasty ramp right where i ported there so i just flatened it a bit. Im sure it will be fine but i dont want to put the whole motor together and find out i have an internal oil leak

That is probably the most common mistake people porting make. I dont know why so many try so hard to get that 100% peferctly smooth, guys have been making big hp numbers for years with the stock rough casting. For those with little experience in porting it just isnt worth the risk of going into the oil control ring path.

I don't think you have to worry about that, but how far outwards did you port? measure the distance from the inner coolant o-ring groove to the top outer edge of the port. Hard to tell in the pics if you went too far.

I used the pineapple racing template so it should be fine that way.

You'd be surprised. I'd still measure it, it only takes a minute. Best to be thorough when porting and assembling a motor.

I agree with GoodFella in that pic it looks real close to the seal land. But its hard to tell with the carbon tracking.

What would be an acceptable measurement, mine is .417 max. You really dont think the other way will be a problem though... I dont know the thought of there being a oil leak after all this haunts me every day. I think i should have just left it for my sanity:lol:

that's 10.6mm, which is too close for my comfort. Is that the maximum or the minimum? what is it at the top closing edge of the port?

Ok its actually in the worst spot 10.80mm max close to the top of the port. The rest is 11 or better. Still scary close....

So is this safe...

I think it's fine, but just barely. Make sure you give the closing edge of the port a nice bevel or you'll chip a side seal, esp on the secondaries.

Ok sounds good i just flappered it and it put a nice bevel on it. Well first port job and first rotary rebuild hope it comes out well. Its been fun and i have learned alot. Thanks for the tips
