pop off valve... what is it?

i've heard of pop-off valves (once or twice on this forum) and it sounds like an excellent way to avoid any boost spikes. i'm not saying to use it as a boost controller, just say... if i'm going to run at 11-12psi, i could adjust the pop-off for 13 that way, if anything happened and for some reason the stocker twins decided to push 20psi towards my intake, the pop-off would really the excess pressure... kinda like a fart i guess :) instead of blowing my engine. am i following the idea correctly here? anyone know of any good ones available on the market?

yeah you get it whats your question? I think greddy makes one im gonna get that one...the thing that sucks though is that 1 psi on our car can make the engine blow. So id run a little lower boost and set it for 12 if thats the max you can run on your setup

ah... yeah i didn't really think about the sensitivity thing too well. i wasn't sure if i understood what they were used for. basically, was making sure i got the idea and if anyone would recommend one, or not using one at all. i'm pretty sure i'll be able to run 12psi on the stock fuel inj. with 95% duty but don't wanna push it that far. will see about setting it around 11.5 and having the pop off go at 11.75ish. GReddy you say though, anywhere i can find that for sale?

That is the idea behind a pop off valve. I woulldent trust that over a nice boost gauge with a big red light though. But i guess some will say every little bit helps.

edit: just noticed the double post :o:

i'm getting a PFC put in my car soon and will be using its monitor for the A/F ratio, boost, knock, etc.

this would have saved my engine since I boosted over 30psi instead of 16 :D

I've got one that I never installed on my car. I'll sell it to you with the adapter plate for like $105 shipped. Never used it. It just an insurance thing. kinda like a secondary wastegate if you will.

i bought the greddy pop off after hearing about someone grenading their engine from a boost spike. the item is well built but after further investigation i decided not to use it. they can leak boost and pop off at varied pressures i am told. most have settled on adjusting their maps so as to run real rich on boost spikes.

you just have to make sure that you have enough injectors to do that. such as 1600s and that your map sensor can recognize the extra boost. the stock one reads to only 1.15 bar.
