Poor man's fix
Here's my dilemma, I've got midpipe (yet to install) and I need to know what the easiest or cheapest way to fix my boost problem. I know that this probably won't be the best, but I need a quick fix. I've heard I can get an upgraded wastegate to handle higher psi. But, I've come to the realization that it will be a bitch to install. I'd appreciate any ideas any of you might have.

The poor man's fix is to leave the mid-pipe off the car. The stock wastegate cannot handle the flow unless you remove the turbos and port the wastegate. If you do not port the wastegate you WILL get boost creep and you WILL hurt the motor.
Leave the mid-pipe off the car. |
IMO, if you are going to put on a midpipe, port your wastegate (if running stock twins). It doesn't do any harm if you don't need it, it will only help in the case that you do need it.
What exactly is your boost problem? Is the rest of the car stock? |
I don't have the problem yet. I've been told that boost will spike immediatly if you have your midpipe on with nothing to control your boost.
No, I have a custom cold air intake, and some performance tires. But I just got the car a couple weeks ago and have an idea of what I want to do, just need some good opinions. |

Please read the newbie sticky at the top of this forum, which will link you with all the relevant sites that will give you tons of info. It will be much faster and easier (trust me) than asking opinions on a thread here to get your questions answered.
Find out about the exhaust, and what opening it up will do, especially if you don't have an ECU to compensate. Hope this helps. |
If you want some more power, put on a cat back. You are NOT READY for a mid pipe. If you don't have a boost gauge, you should get get one before any other mods.
|
these people post good info for you here.
learn what the repercussions are before modding and you won't blow the motor. it only takes one bad boost spike to kill your motor. |
What type of Cat back would you put on it. Performance is more important to me than sound. I've heard good things about Apex N-1 and N-1 dual but again this is not my personal accounts. What's the Beat dual tip like?
|
Type in "racing beat dual tip" into the search function, and you'll get a ton of info.

I know I'll take heat for this, but what about a boost controller to take care of the boost spike and more efficient (ported) wastegate to take care of the creep. Would there be any other problems with my midpipe? I can't stand the fact that there is no solution to a midpipe that dosn't include spending 2 grand.

You could always put a reistrictor plate at one end of the midpipe. I don't know of anyone to actually do that though.

In 2 months, after you have learned a little about the car, install a boost gauge. For now, leave it alone. Believe it or not, that's very good advice. Adam |
how do you port your wastegates?(is there a how to web site with this) cause i have a mid pipe and before i got boost leak i was shooting up 15psi. and also what are the cons to wastgate porting or reistrictor plates?

if he does ANYTHING, he should come chat with me, i'm local to him and i know a thing or two :)

FD3RotorTurbo Try the How stuff works website I'm sure they'll have something.
Thanks Adam, since I've had it only two weeks it shouldn't do me any good to ask anyone about the car they know every inch of. Cool of brother, this is what you called EXTENSIVE RESEARCH. I'll just disregard you comments since they serve no purpose to me. O.K. I apologize I know that it would kill you if I modded up without your extremely in depth analysis. I take it your point is to learn what I'm doing before I jump in, so thanks, but that's why I asked before installing. If you want to help me give me some figures or something don't just tell me I can't do it. Thanks everyone. I appreciate your comments. |
Buckhead huh? I'm down by Virginia Highlands.

yeah, there's several FD's worth of parts in my garage, building three motors this month too
might be cool to hook up and let me check your car out |

There are no real cons to porting the wastegate, however, there are cons to adding restrictor plates as you will sacrifice power. IMO, if you are not going to port your wastegate, don't bother running a midpipe, just use a hi-flo cat. At least with a hi-flo cat, you'll get restriction as well as reduced fumes (instead of adding restriction to a midpipe and still having fumes). Originally posted by deified I know I'll take heat for this, but what about a boost controller to take care of the boost spike and more efficient (ported) wastegate to take care of the creep. Would there be any other problems with my midpipe? I can't stand the fact that there is no solution to a midpipe that dosn't include spending 2 grand. What Adam and everyone else is trying to tell you is that YES you can run a midpipe on the stock ECU. Should you do it? NO. You can drive your car with your feet, but that doesn't make it a good idea. While you can get boost under control by using a combination of a boost controller and porting the wastegate, you can and probably will run into problems especially in cold weather (as the air is MUCH more dense). IMO, don't run a midpipe unless you do the following: 1. Port the wastegate 2. Install an electronic boost controller 3. Run an aftermarket ecu NOT including a GForce or M2 (Pettit ECU, PowerFC, Haltech) The reason I suggest not to use the GForce or M2, but do suggest the Pettit is that I've seen people blow engines with the other two running midpipes but none in my area with the Pettit. M2 actually says not to run midpipes with their ECU. There have been, and are, people that do... but I don't suggest it. Another thing to consider is that simply running the stock ECU, even with all bolt-on mods isn't going to get you a lot of power, if that's what you want. The most I've seen so far on the stock ECU is 266rwhp (with all bolt-on mods, including a midpipe, running at 10 PSI). Now, that's good considering a stock FD will dyno around 220rwhp. However, those same mods with an ECU upgrade and boost raised to 12 PSI will be over 300rwhp. Increasing the boost on turbocharged cars is how you go faster. |
