I had an interesting proposition made to me by a Meineke owner a few days ago. He told me that instead of paying $500+ for a new cat-back exhaust, just buy a muffler and tip. He said he could custom bend some stainless pipes to fit my car and would only charge me $200. He also said he could do the same for a downpipe. Does this seem like a good idea?

I think the CB would be fine. I don't think he could do a DP easily.

hoe is he going to put on the flanges on either end of the dp? is he going to machine those? if so look out, make sure it all lines up correctly. plus the welds in the dp better be high quality or else they will break due to high temps. as for the cat back....? i would rather go with a known name and a catback made for turbos.

The exhaust temps of a rotary engine are much higher than a piston engine. A "standard" muffler may not hold up very well. If they will do it with a lifetime warranty for parts and labor, it may be worth a try.

Don't let them make you a DP. That's asking for trouble.

agreed. DO NOT let him make you a DP... you'll be much better off just buying one.

I think he was talking about buying a muffler from Greddy or HKS and fit the pipes to it. What would be the maximum diameter I would want to have for piping without losing back pressure?

3" piping is what you want

are u talking about a straight pipe from manifold to cat back? or are you keeping the main cat?

if staight pipe you need to chg ecu and port wastegate.
i personaly use 3" piping. i'm not too sure if going bigger would be better.

other wise just get a dp and catback it should be all bolt on no other piping needed.

Keeping the cat, and may get high flow cat later. I don't want to get a new ECU until I get some more mods. Are there any links of some custom fabricators so I can get some ideas? Pics would work too.

If its a Meineke chances are 99 times out of 100 that they're crush bending piping, which is NOT what you want for a performance exhaust. You want to use mandrel bent piping which maintains a constant diameter throughout the piping and dosen't create bottlenecks at the bends. One option is to use pre-bent U-bends from a place like www.burnsstainless.com and cut them to the nessicary shapes.

Trust me though, STAY AWAY from crush bent piping, its not worth your time.
