POLL: Car fire options. what should I do?

fuel pulse dampener went bye bye while I was warming up my car in my garage. got a hose on it very quickly and put it out within 5 minutes. so it didn't get out of control. there are burnt soloniods, a toasted wiring harness and of course, vac lines. thank goodness for insurance. here's the breakdown. the stealership quoted i little over nine grand for PARTS ALONE!!! that plus labor effectivly totals the car. here's the dillema

1. get my stuff out of it, total it out. it's paid off, but I lose money and time I've invested.

2. get the totaled value, minus salvage (around $4000 I imagine) leaving me with around $8000 to fix it myself or take it to someone who doesn't have thier head up their ass.

complications. I've got a money crunch right now due to fleeing roommates and not paying the loan and insurance on the car every month would be good. but the car is of course, worth $3000 more then the book value. I don't doubt I couldn't fix it, but I don't have a lot of spare time, so I have to wonder if I can get the mazda specialty shop in town (not a dealership by any means. the guy only works on rotory's) to fix it for $8000-$9000. I don't know how much a reasonable price for a small engine fire is.

good stuff. I've already gotten a galant VR-4 in the meantime and someone drove their car into the back of one of my volkswagens in november doing 40 so I should be getting my settlement money soon.

opinions. I know we all want to keep our cars so please try to be objective. thank you.

I believe Forum member "turbojeff" has experience rebuilding fire damaged FD's. Try PMing him.
