Polished Dash Subframe!!
Well it took a while but I finally finished polishing my dash subframe. This pic doesn't show it off very well but it is all I have to post right now. I am not sure I would spend the 35+ hours to do it again but I am sure it will be well worth it one I get it all back in.

excuse my ignorance.. but what's that?
|
Somebody save this man before he gets crazier. How may I ask will you view the work with it back in the car????
|
One question. WHY?
I'm sorry but one more. WHY??????? |
Am I missing something here? That goes under the dash? And you can't see it at all? Hmmm...
|
Same question as above...why?
|
I give you credit for loving your car as much as you do.
Now, you can add that as a selling point, if you decide to sell your car. "The subframe has been polished to not just eliminate excess weight, but also adds strength by smoothing off the imperfections found w/ normal subframes." I'm speechless that you went through all that polishing. You set a new standard for "bling bling". You "bling bling" from underneath. (As a note, you may want to clear coat the subframe. IF it is a metal that is capable of oxiding/rust, then you may want to protect it w/ a coating. Or else, your work will be for nothing.) |
Sub-Bling :p:
Rusty |
Holy fuck you've got to be kidding! Damn...that's some dedication!
Someone has waaaaaaaay too much time on their hands! ;) |
I think the ironic thing is that it's going to rust... the dash subframe isn't stainless or aluminum. I've seen them covered with rust, and even mine has light rust in areas where I've touched it. Same goes for the steering column.
If you went to all the trouble of polishing it, you'll want to clearcoat it before reinstalling it. It's the least you could do. :) |
It looks painted to me
STEPHEN |
I'm with everyone else. Why?
Also I'm with everyone else on the clear coat or painting. That sucker is just mild steel, it'll rust everywhere you touch it and it'll rust from humidity and even worse if your near the ocean. North Carolina right? Jeff |
clearcoat it before it rusts

Exactly where in NC are you, Shawn? |
I'd like to also recommend a few other items to polish, since you seem to have ample time;the entire frame, the roof portion under the headliner, and the trunk space under the spare. When you finish that, pull up the cabin carpet, I'm sure there's plenty to polish under there............poor guy must have a chromosomal disorder.
|
Up next for Shawn's performance alternatives..."The Undercarriage" ;)
|
I think shawn should pull his fuel filter and have it chrome plated. And neon colored hose for inside his fuel tank. And for the motor, have murals air brushed in the water passages.
I shouldn't make fun of him. I've done stuff almost as bad. But, when it comes to unseen mods, The person who knows it's been is the person that matters the most: the owner. |
I'm saving that pic for my reference... sometimes it's nice to have a real life picture of some of that crap so you can see where to mount something or what bolt or piece might be causing something to stick...
Oh yeah while you're at it, you may want to polish the inside of the wheels... :) Brian |
anyone tried polishing the rotors? I bet it'll give you at least 40 more HP!!! I'm going to pull my motor and try it right after I go INSANE!!! hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa
|
holy crap, thats pretty good. how in the heck did you pull that thing out anyways? did you do it just for fun?
|
guys guys... give this man a break!!
WHY? its simple... less weight... :D just pulling your legs shawn... how abt a pix of your ride instead? ;) |
nice, you should polish every part of your car.
|
 Holy crap that's a lot of time!
|
Wow...nice!
My god...Are you married? Or single? :wtf: |
you are so my hero. I would recommend polishing the entire undercarriage. This would be major subpolishing bling bling.

Thanks for all the feedback and great suggestions. The plastic drop on my driveway was because I already clearcoated it. The reason this whole project started was the rust. I am glad to know it is a common problem - I thought my car was the only one. Still not back together but I am already thinking about polishing my suspension A-arms now that you have mentioned it gorden. Here is a closer pic.

wowwww major sub bling - you are like so hard core
|
Interesting turnout with this thread...it could have easily gone the 'other' way...:p:
|
You guys don't know? That's JDM, all the Japanese cars are having that done now...
|
Rad under-bling!
What is anyone's take on power-coating that piece. Is it too heavy? Second pik is very cool. Thanks ShawnK and all the funny responses. Nat |
hey man now you can add that to your sig, hahahaha..... nice work. If I send you mine will you do the same thing to it? How much?
Matt |
:p: Now I don't feel so weird about wanting to polish out the tranny housing while I have the car up in the air for clutch job. I already have had the bell housing powder coated and it look great. Now to add the shine to the behind. :D
|
I think this dood also spends alot of time polishing his...
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .............................. rocket!:mspank: :D |
That looks like dull silver spray paint to me or you just sanded it and forgot to actually buff & polish...?
|
Well I suppose I have had all the fun I am going to with this thread. It is in fact as spautos and a few other have said - I did not polish my subframe. I posted this fully expecting to get flamed to death and hopefully get a few funny responses (which I got plenty that were both funny and witty). I must say I am surprised at the forum for all of the positive things people said. It is good to see and makes me a little happier about participating in this community. I hope that everyone can read back over this thread knowing it was a joke and laugh as hard as I did the first couple days. Here is a pic of the actual job I did on my subframe - I simply sanded it (rough sand) then coated with rust reclaimer and then sanded again and painted with rustoleum. My goal was to stop the rust only since I will be driving this car for the next 50 years or so (or rather I will be driving it 25 out of the next 50 years and it will be in my garage apart for the other 25 if history has any reflection on the future) and I dont want that stuff to fall apart on me.
http://www.3rdgenrx7.com/images/photos/notpolished.jpg Let me thank all of those who posted on this thread for the many laughs you provided! |
I am all about the rustoleum - Nice job.
|
Oh, so you just blowin smoke up our asses den huh? I think you were going to keep us going but your conscience got a hold of you :D...Either way, I did get a laugh.
|
what in gods name
ahahahaha... and people around here are saying teenagers are crazy!!! props man the polishing looks good, honestly... next you should polish your car, aha, everywhere you go people will be crashing w/ all that bling.
