can you tap it out from the opposite side?

I've never had the diff cover off of mine, but you might try pulling that and see if you can access it somehow to pop it out. If it were mine, I'd want to drop the cover anyway, to check for shavings or bits of metal rolling around in there.

I have taken a cover off and you can see the shaft. I would definately go with the Sgt's recommendation due to the fact that you may have metal pieces in the diff.
P.S. I have an extra set of axles if you are looking.

do i have to remove the diff to take the cover off or can it be done on the car, thanks

pull opposite axle. find a stout driftpin and tap the broken stub out from the other side (post #2).

pull the back cover and clean/inspect it. use a magnet. chances are you will find little debris.

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question how do you get the cover off? i drained the fluid and removed the 8 bolts and nothing , i tried using a screwdriver to pry it open is there something i'm missing? thanks

nope just make sure all bolts are off and give her a nice crack

Tap it from the sides with a hammer and block of wood. It will break the sealant bond and come right off.

How in hell did you twist both axles off like that - 6000rpm dump ? You're lucky the housing stayed intact ( look for cracks )

tom - i broke it dumping the clutch at 5500 rpms. i wanted to thank everyone for their advise i got the broken cv joint out but now new axle won't go in. i've broke axle's before and replaced them with no problem did the driver side last week but the passanger side wont go all the way in. i thought it might be the c-clip so i removed it to see if the axle would go in and still nothing. it doesn't look like anything is still in the diff. i have some pics, any ideas? thanks

I had no problem when I replaced the differential seals on my FD, just make sure the open end of the clip is (IIRC from the FSM) at the 12 o'clock position.
FWIW, I helped a friend replace the clutch on his daughter's Probe (FWD) and we ended up using a hammer on a block of wood at the wheel end of the shaft to get it to seat into the transmission.

Nof.
Wow... The carnage... Looks like you may have some metal shavings in the way... Be patient with it... You'll get it sooner or later... Wish I could help you buddy.
