PLX-Devices SM-AFR ***56k NO***

Not sure how many other people have this wideband in their car, but I thought I would make a writeup on it since Ive never seen one before. The unit was 284 shipped two day air from PLXdevices.com and despite an address error, it got here pretty quickly. These two boxes arrived.

The control unit and gauge are ridiculously small and weigh a total of ~2.5 lbs.
Card there for reference. No I don't care if you know who I am haha.

My original mounting location was behind the drivers side kick-panel but it turns out it wasn't deep enough to fit the controller, so I found a flat surface on some other on board computer and stuck the controller on with some double-sided tape.

You have to solder the main power lead and ground to the connector provided. Hot in the middle, ground on the outside.

Ran the wires through the firewall and attached the wideband.

Heres the gauge off

And on

The only problem I had with the system is that I had 2 feet or so of spare wire and the harness is pretty big so it was hard to fit. You could always cut and solder the wires together and take some spare out. But for the love of God, mark the white wires.

I purchased one last week, should arrive soon. Hopefully it will perform well. Do you have a PFC?

NissanConvert 05-18-07 02:03 PM

How far down the exhaust did you install the bung? No pics?

NoMorePoison 05-18-07 02:06 PM

Yes I do

How did you connect it to the PFC? Do you also have a datalogit?

NoMorePoison 05-19-07 12:01 PM

Just through the 0-2V analog input. And I dont have the datalogit. ON the 02 install for a day I installed it in the bung that was already on my downpipe, ~8inches after the turbos. Then I got a new bung put in ~24 inches down. Both ways it worked great actually

NissanConvert 05-19-07 10:42 PM

On my NGK AFX it recommends to put the bung 10x exhaust diameter down from the turbos so 3" exhaust ~ 30" back. I doubt 6" will make a difference but i wouldn't put the sensor 8" down from the turbos or i doubt it will last long. still no pics?

rynberg 05-19-07 10:51 PM

Any wideband far up on the downpipe should have a heatsink for sure, and even then could be subject to overheating. Really, the best place for the sensor is near the downpipe/midpipe junction where they are both flat -- place in either pipe.

NoMorePoison, thanks for the write-up, I have the SM-AFR sitting in my garage waiting to be installed....

NoMorePoison 05-20-07 05:19 AM

No problem, like I said, I searched and saw very little on this item. its been working great. Now if I could just get my car running again, I could enjoy knowing my car is running safely haha

How would you connect it to the datalogit?

NoMorePoison 05-20-07 08:50 PM

Just by running it into the 0-2v analog input on the pfc

How would you connect it to the datalogit?
The SM-AFR control box has two additional outputs: one is the raw wideband voltage, the other is a simulated narrow-band signal that mimics a stock O2 sensor.

EDIT: The 1st can go to any other devices that need a wideband, such as a datalogit.

NoMorePoison 05-20-07 09:07 PM

Yes i understand that, from what the plx guys told me, you can run the narrowband in and, if attached to a datalogger, you can use it as a tuning signal

David Hayes 05-21-07 07:32 AM

Any problems with your PLX gauge "freezing" up? Does it intermittently freeze and then reset itself? Mine does.

NoMorePoison 05-21-07 01:28 PM

No problems yet no, I read about that happening though on their site. They had a little forum that should have your answer.

1. Run wire from wideband 0-5V output to aux input on Datalogit. Include noise reducing caps on the wire if applicable.
2. Enable input on datalogit and tell it what it is.
3. Ground 0-5V output and Datalogit input to same point.

NoMorePoison 05-21-07 02:57 PM

Thank you rynberg. I knew it wasnt that complicated...

Monkman33 05-21-07 06:34 PM

I have a quick question. would it be feasible to have a wide-band sensor for each rotor? and run a circuit to have the display signal switch over to the leanest rotor. (Could even have it switch an led to note which rotor it is sensing) Or even a switch to go between both? I saw the dual EGT gauge and I like that concept.... but since I have yet to see a dual AFR gauge..

Or would this be WAY over kill on monitoring systems?

Perhaps I am just paranoid of running too rich after tearing down my old engine and seeing more carbon in there than my fish tank filters.

NissanConvert 05-21-07 07:03 PM

you don't need dual afrs, the afrs won't change anywhere between the downpipe and the cat. after the cat it doesn't matter.

Monkman33 05-21-07 07:06 PM

Would it be possible to mount then in the manifold (such as was done in the dual egt setup posted on here... somewhere) to get readings right at the exhaust port, before the turbos.

Or would that be too much heat?

dontlift 05-21-07 07:10 PM

Or would that be too much heat?
Yup

:thread jack alert:

i want to run my wb wire through the passnger side, is there an easy way? anybody got pics?

I have my main power wire for my relocated batt in the driver side and don't want to introduce noise or interference for the wb signal... or is this a non-issue?

I vote non-issue. I wrote a long reply but it got lost and I had to log in again.

In a nutshell, any high-frequency noise from the alternator isn't such a big deal since the wideband controller is expecting a much lower-frequency signal than the alternator noise. It's pretty likely that the PLX will just filter out any alternator whine in the oxygen sensor signal.
