Is this the plug for the VSS?
 

Looks like 1 orange and 1 green wire, and it's on the US driver's side of the transmission. In my head I had visualised the plug coming directly off of a sensor, but this goes into a loom above the transmission and I can't reliably tell if it goes to the speed sensor or not.
So to the people that have been into this wiring before - is the speed sensor wiring the orange plug in the photos?

Normally all the plugs there are grey. Are you trying to troubleshoot a non working speedo?

Is your car RHD or LHD?

The sensors on the trans have short pigtails going from them to the bracket on the side of the trans, then they plug into the harness coming down the transmission from the ECU harness.

Looks like it's going to the neutral switch on top of the extension housing.

It's a low-mileage JDM car
About 18 months ago the odo died. Replaced the caps and it helped for a little while and then it died again.
6 months later the tach/speedo became erratic. I added a solid ground and 12V to the back of the cluster and they were reliable for a few months, then they died completely. The other gauges (and the rest of the car) still worked fine.
Over this winter I decided to switch from my PFC and stock cluster to a Modular Adaptronic and AEM CD-7 digital dash
Since I have no cluster, I don't have the speedo circuitry conditioning the VSS signal and sending it to the ECU. I'll need to send the VSS signal to the ECU in an alternate fashion, and I thought the most reliable way would be to use a new wire directly from the plug down on the transmission.
I've read that it's a 2 wire plug that I'm looking for, with a green wire and an orange wire. This one seems to fit the description, but like I said, I had pictured a connector coming from the sensor itself, and this is a plug among other plugs so I'm unsure if it's the right spot.

Are you opposed to pick up the VSS signal from Connector C1-01 (3rd plug, Pins 3A and 3C) or from Connector X-15 Pins Y/R and Y/W? Both are easily accessible from the dash area and they are a straight shot from the VSS Connector, C1-08. Not to mention that you would use less wire running from the VSS and avoid routing additional wire through the chassis/firewall.

What are your plans with the old speedo & instrument cluster?

It didn't occur to me until after I had the dash back together (with the CD-7 installed) that I probably could've just jumpered the 'VSS In' to the 'Speedo Out' behind the cluster and I wouldn't have needed to rewire anything else. Now if I do that it's going to be a big pain in the ass to get everything back out and in again... and I'm running wires through the firewall anyway for water injection, so it's no big deal to run them all at once. Ideal at this point is to re-pin the VSS connector on the transmission and run a new wire in through the firewall.

The old gauges have been removed from the cluster, other than the fuel gauge, which I will use until I have worked out displaying fuel level accurately in the CD-7. I'm using the rest of the cluster for the idiot lights and to house my new relays and such
The other old gauges went into a box for safe keeping. If I end up finding someone locally that can repair electronics properly, I'll probably have the speedo board professionally reworked, even if I don't end up using it for a long time.
