Please, make it STOP! (coolant buzzer)

Allright, I'm about to go insane! Since I got my car back the coolant light is always on (comes on about 10 seconds after start-up). Initially, I thought it was the flasher CPU since that was fried, but I've since replaced it and now, instead of just the light, I get to listen to the constant beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep of the damn coolant buzzer, too :(

I've burped, reburped, checked and re-checked my coolant; I am absolutely 100% certain I am NOT low on coolant, but still the light and buzzer. The sensor on the filler neck checked out okay as well.

Is there a second sensor somewhere, or is it likely I have a short somewhere in the wiring?

Please help....before I go crazy and start ripping wires out in a mad craze!!!!!!!

Maybe you need new caps? Perhaps the rubber is worn, and leaking air.
Mine would buzz ~ the same time as you described once when I didn't tighten the AST cap
Pep boys sells those generic brand 1.3 bar caps for $7 if it really is that.

G'luck

There is a plug on the drivers side of the block that may have come off...;)

Make sure that the overflow tank on the passengers side front of the car is full. If that tank is low then the buzzer will come on.

A low overflow tank will not cause the buzzer to come, nor will a leaking radiator cap (assuming the coolant level is above the sensor). Are you sure the sensor is good? Try grounding the plug that goes to the sensor and see if that stops the buzzer. If that doesn't, then you'll need to trace the wiring back until you find the break.

Depending on how bad your wiring harness is, the low coolant sensor wire could have fell off the sensor. If your cooling is free of air pockets and you coolant is always full and leake free it might be the sensor itself or the wiring.

Where did you just get your car back from?

There are 2 sensors, check both connections, one of them probably came loose.

Consider mr-rx7tt's advice...it's very easy for the plug at the harness near the front trailing plug to come loose or break all together by becoming brittle.

rxrotary2_7 05-16-03 07:54 AM

if memory serves, there are actualy 5 different connections along the way for the coolant sensor/what would cause the buzzer if it were actualy full. if you find nothing wrong and it drives you THAT crazy... there are 2 plugs right by the driver side headlight that you can easily tap into and ground it out. dont quote me on the exact wire but i believe its the 2nd row, 3rd wire??? i will double chech latter.

If there are 2 sensors, where's the second one?

I *could* just ground it out, but an actual coolant warning isn't something I'd like to miss because I grounded the sensor! I'll have to dig into it on my next day off.

Thanks for the ideas/info. If anyone has anything to add, please do!

If there are two sensors, I have no idea where the second one is. I can tell you for sure that it is not on the engine, since I've had mine completely apart.

Try grounding it out and see if that stops the buzzer. This will tell you whether it is the sensor or the wiring.
