That would be the 3rd Gen I-know-everything-so-I'm-going-to-do-it-myself-and-end-up-looking-a-dumba$$-club!

That's right - first I put my clutch disk on backwards and bled/adjusted the clutch for a week trying to figure out why it didn't quite work after I swapped in the new engine...

And then today I had the joy of fishing my primary turbo's turbine wheel out of the Cat after the compressor nut came off... Can you say turbo city rebuild kit? Sure I knew you could. Did you know that when you're pumping oil right into the exhaust manifold after the turbine shaft leaves, the smoke cloud behind your car looks just like one of those big Formula One Engine KaBlammos on TV?

Lessons learned:
1. Make sure the yellow dot on the clutch disk is facing out where you can see it.

2. Don't try to rebuild stock twins yourself - even if you are a 40 yr old Mechanical Engineer and think you know better. Just throw them away and buy some good used ones in the For Sale section.

So - join my club - I hate looking like an idiot all by myself...

what is it that makes the stock twins so unrebuildable?

I suppose an RX7 God like DGeeseman could do it - but not a novice like me. The turbo city rebuild kit is a bad Chinese? joke - a few bushings and gaskets and worthless instructions...

In my case I was unable to fully torque the compressor nut because the rotating group would sieze up - so I torqued it as much as I dared and used some red locktite - the nut still came off... I suspect there's something out of spec in the Center bearing housing that the rebuild kit doesn't address - mine were smoking so I hoped that a new turbine seal would fix it - no such luck - it smoked and then it grenaded. The assembly should also be balanced by a turbo shop before re-assembly - mine didn't make noise but they also went boom.

well...at least you'll never make those 2 mistakes again.

You can pay turbo city to balance and rebuild your twins for very little over the cost of the rebuild kit. Usually twins aren;t rebuildable.

Today's exciting club activities included snapping off two studs on my stock cast iron twins manifold...

Anybody got any neat tricks for backing out stud remnants from the manifold - already tried to drill out one of the them - and of course broke the drill bit off in the stud... they are both blind holes - of course - was using the double nut method and lots of PB Blaster - they broke anyway.

Anybody have any luck with Sears/Harbor Freight ez-outs or stud-extractor thingees??? I have a metric tap and can clean it up if I can get the stud out without doing too much damage...

It just doesn't pay to get out of bed, some years...

Are they broke flush now? If not, use a torch to heat them and then vise-grips (with gloves) to turn them. If the are broke flush, you can try heating them and then using an EZ Out.

They are both broken off flush with the exhaust manifold surface - at least this is the manifold so I can pull it off the car and work on it on the bench.

So - yes I think I'm down to drilling it out (have to buy a nice hard bit) and then trying to find a good Sears or HF EZ out.

I was trying to heat the stud area with a Mapp torch - I was thinking you want to heat the manifold but not the stud itself - true?

Maybe a Helicoil too in my future - arggggh

Ill join your club. Everytime I work on my car I break something its really frustrating thats why now Im getting rid of everything my cr doesnt need to run so I can break less stuff lol. Im so glad I have a DD

I usually break something or cut myself! It is usually the latter. Do you know what happens when your feeling for the broken apex seal inside your engine and you slip with the ratchet on the front pulley? Thats right kids, you take the end of your finger off!!!!

Mental note, under no circumstances should I at any point of time be sticking my finger inside a rotary engine of any kind unless it is in pieces!!
