It's the 3rd gen designation.
2nd Gens are FCs
80-85 1st Gens are FBs

Are the letters actual initials of 2 words? Not that anyone around here knows about......

It's been brought up before, and the general consensus seems to be that the letters mean mothing :p

The SA22C is saddened by your lack of acknowledgement Flybye, we have feelings too. LOL.

SA22C= 79-80

The FD/FC/FB shorthands are dirived from the 4th and 5th digits of the VINs (Vehicle Identification Number) of their respective generations.

If you have an RX-7, presumably a 3rd gen. given that you are writing to this forum, you will see an FD in your VIN.

Yeah, but doesn't everyone already know that before they get their 7's?
I did because I knew I wanted a car that had character and wasn't maintream sitting at every corner. So, I can work on it and know what went in to making the car run smoothly. Of course race someone and say you just got your a$$ kicked by a 1.1 - 1.3 liter engine (depending on the engine) and two(or three) triangles. :D

I'll have to do it again ...

OK, it's not from the VIN, but yes it is in the VIN. "FD" is shorthand for Mazda's chasis code for the car -- FD3S -- which means nothing to anyone except for Mazda, sorta. This is said by pronouncing each letter/number ... "eff-dee-three-ess." Some people mistake the "S" on the end as a plural form of "FD3" which is wrong. It is not and "FD3" and the plural for is not "eff-dee-threes." So ... FD3S ("eff-dee-three-ess") or "FD" for short. Plural of that can be "FDs". As has been said, the second gen is "FC" short for FC3S and the 1st gen is SA22C ... "SA" ... I think only in the USA does that "FB" designation exist for some weird reason.

In Japan, it's much more common to refer to cars by chasis code because it quickly designates the generation, manufacturer, and model of a car, rather than saying "3rd Generation Mazda RX-7." It's also used sometimes because multiple cars are built on the same/similar platform with internal parts that are universal ("mods", etc.).
