Please help me troubleshoot wht my FD won't start.

First of all, thanks in advance.

This past Sunday, after going for a drive, I changed out my dead battery for a new, healthy battery. My car was already warmed up, so I wasn't concerned with flooding the car, but afterwards, the car started up, stuttered a bit, then shut down. I figured I just didn't hold they key down log enough, but it just wouldn't start up again after that.

I thought I flooded the engine, so I did all the necessary steps to un-flood it. I even figured it was a good time to put in fresh spark plugs (all four).

Nope. Nothin'

When I turn the key, it just makes that starting sound, but it just doesn't turn over!

I thought maybe I blew the EGI fuse or the fuel pump fuse, but they're both fine. Coul I have killed my fuel pump somehow without blowing the fuse? The pump is only a year old rx7.com upgraded pump.

I don't know what else to check. how can I check if there is fuel pressure? Any other tips of what to look for?

Thanks again,

Ian

First things i check for, do you get fuel? i just pull the hose off and check. I check for spark by pulling a plug. If you got both, i'd start really deflooding or putting a little starter fluid in to help it clear up

Check for spark and fuel.

The EASIEST way to check for fuel pressure is to just open up one of the lines and turn the key to accessory, but gas gets everywhere. =P

3GRX7 11-17-09 11:51 PM

which hose do I need to pull to check for fuel?

widebodyseven 11-18-09 12:25 AM

Under the throttle body elbow theres 3 fuel lines those are the easiest ones to get to if you don't want to go digging under the uim.

i leave the egi fuse in, unplug the coil pack at the harness, and take out the plugs. Then i crank the car and if the fuel pump is working, i'll see a cloud of fuel/air coming out of the engine bay. Easier then pulling the fuel lines and getting fuel everywhere.

GreatShamanGT 11-18-09 02:28 AM

u cud just put the fuel in a bottle >.>

in the diagnostic box under the hood, jumper the F/P and GND terminals with the key in the ON position and the engine off. that's your fuel pump diagnostic which will turn on the pump and pressurize the system if the pump in fact works.

Remove one of the plugs and check for signs of flooding

oppa637 11-18-09 09:48 AM

are just unplug the left hose under the throttle body and have a bottle ready to catch the fuel

FDWarrior 11-18-09 10:10 AM

Did you say the car dose not turn over?

Yes, i second that. A lot more accurate and a smarter way to check.

Possibly the engine is seriously flooded with a mix of low compression. Push start or ATF/Seafoam in the chambers is worth a try.

A flooded engine usually fouls out spark plugs.check for spark with a good ground/check if you have the right plugs and condition of the plugs.

It looks like my fuel pump is not turning on. I checked the fuse in the driver's side kick panel, and it's fine. what else can I do to check why the pump's not getting power? I can't imagine the pump has gone bad, as it's less than 1 year old and was working perfectly prior to me changing out my battery.

Any ideas are much appreciated!

Anyone have a wiring diagram?

Thanks,

Ian

do the fuel pump rewiring and you'll know for sure that it's getting powered and everything.

3GRX7 11-18-09 04:52 PM

I was looking at the fuel pump rewiring in the FAQ, but the link is dead. Is it anywhere else?

oppa637 11-18-09 05:45 PM

Did you try cranking the motor? My fuel pump won't turn on less I start cranking

KKMpunkrock2011 11-18-09 05:53 PM

just search fuel pump rewire, there are quite a few versions all over the place.

3GRX7 11-18-09 07:15 PM

I would, but the search function has been down for quite some time

GreatShamanGT 11-18-09 09:25 PM

When is the search function gonna come back on? I have some researching to do =[

i am having a similar issue...here to read.

I have 94 MB FD too... been sitting since NOV 10th and now wont start... starter turns and motor turns, battery is fine but no fire or attempt to start otherwise. Hope its not a hard fix...

djseven 11-24-09 03:10 PM

1st: Does the tach bounce very slightly when cranking the car?
2nd: Verified you have spark?
3rd: Compression test?

Run through those steps and we will get it figured out, goes to the OP and the Person above my post.

gnictry 11-24-09 03:14 PM

my tach does not bouce...i have lights, odo, warning lights...but not movement on gauges. I will check plugs and hopefully compression-well bf will later this week ...ug

djseven 11-24-09 03:18 PM

The tach would boucne very very very slightly, but you can see it move, if it isnt moving either the EGI fuse is blown or the Crank Angle Sensors are bad or the wiring to them is bad. Simple fix or should be anyway.

oppa637 11-24-09 06:38 PM

also check fuel

gnictry 11-25-09 09:08 PM

will i have spark at wire, f/p primes, did nt have tools to check fuel at lines, exhaust smell like fuel-not strong but there,

you can here the motor turn and kind of a pup pup sound in exhaust from it moving but nothing acutally tries to start

did not have tool for compression testing either

bought new plugs and will hopefully be able to test some more and do plugs tomorrow...

thanks for advice
