here you go guys:

external 180F mocal thermostat
dual remote filter pedestal (filters fit a 77 ford bronco, hold .5qt each, lol)
34row mocal oil cooler

and i made the brackets/mounting hardware :)

Looks nice but the second pic isnt working.

Working now, thats a really nice looking arrangement there. Would you mind sharing all the part numbers for the unions and fittings?

93BlackFD 07-25-04 09:25 AM

yeah, it's pretty straight forward, the only parts that might be a challenge to find, are the thread pitches of the stock stuff, i.e, the stock filter pedestal is 20mmx1.5mm

the oil output/input on the engine is 18mmx1.5mm, the rest are -10AN fittings, just have to pick the bends for the hose ends that are appropriate for your setup.

I went to home depot and got two strips of 1" wide aluminum and one right angle piece of aluminum

hacksaw+drill, and i made some brackets, mounted it all up

the thermostat isn't even mounted to anything, the braided lines are so stiff, it holds it nice and sturdy out of the way

rfreeman27 07-25-04 09:27 AM

How does that thermostat work, ive been trying to figure it out for a little bit.

on the right side you have the main feed and return.

I would guess the left would be the feed and return from the oil cooler?

but it doesent look like the hoses are running that way in your picture ?

93BlackFD 07-25-04 09:31 AM

that's correct...or you can criss cross, basically it is shaped like an H

the " H " loops both sides unless the temp is 180F, then it is more like an I I

make sense?

rfreeman27 07-25-04 09:53 AM

Yeah it does, but why do you have it mounted there? Looks liek your going to have to pull a 180 to get back to the oil cooler.

I guess there are no lines coming off the left side of the thermostat, are thoes caps over the holes? thats what threw me off.

93BlackFD 07-25-04 09:58 AM

i used tried some 160deg bends to go back to drivers side cooler, but it was pulling the thermostat down, so i ended up using two 90deg bends

i mounted there in prepreation for the passenger side, but i'm going to wait a bit for that (these things are $290/piece shipped)

93BlackFD 07-25-04 10:36 AM

engine ran avg idle temp ot 210-215 with NO oil cooler

sat at about 190F with one stock oil cooler

its not going above 165F (no water thermostat in car) now with single 34 row

so i guess with my fans on blast, and the oil cooler keeping the oil at 180F, the water temp is now good enough for me to pound on the car

RE13REW 07-25-04 11:15 AM

does mazda dealer sell the updated thermostat ?

93BlackFD 07-25-04 07:48 PM

updated thermostat? I'm confused....the oil thermostat I am running is a custom external MOCAL unit

93BlackFD 07-25-04 08:02 PM

took it out for a spin today, total oil capacity is 7quarts, my water temp in traffic is about 170F, hitting the car hard with boost repetedly and I could barely get water temp to 200F, i am waiting on oil temp gauge to come this week, hopefully i'll have more results

Zyon13B 07-25-04 09:32 PM

where's the pic? I don't see it.

i'll attach again, these forums are screwy

Wow, that's hardcore!

93blackfd,

nice setup! That mocal thermostat is the same that is used on Crooked Willow's kit.

If i remeber right, when it closes...it shuts it off to both coolers right?

Anyways, just make sure you don't have any tension in that area...that were mine failed costing me an engine.

93BlackFD 07-25-04 10:44 PM

tension? what do you mean? the left side of the thermostat is bypassed unless the temps exceed 180F

so if you plumb it w/ both coolers on the left, then you're okay to drive it around while its still warming up

my thermostat, with it sitting there in a tight fitting engine compartment would come under tension especially when the engine would get rev'd....that worked one of my fittings loose.

I remember looking at the layout of the crooked willow set...how do you have the two coolers plumbed? For my set up it was in series... so:
outlet to--->one side of the thermostat---> oil cooler----> second oil cooler --->back to thermostat--->to oil return

I couldnt figure out how the thermostat would shut off only one of the coolers in that configuration because it was in series....maybe I just didnt understand how that thermostat worked...

93BlackFD 07-25-04 11:51 PM

you don't want oil in either cooler if its less than 180F....

you're thinking it will run one cooler all the time and open the second if need be, that's not the case, your car would take forever to come up to temp

7racer 07-25-04 11:54 PM

ahh..yea I thought you were suggesting that with the thermostat...that one was open and the other was closed....

However, doesn't the R1 system work by only bypassing one of the coolers!?!? I am almost sure that the thermostat in the R1 just stops the flow to the one cooler allowing it run to the other...

Jay7 Nyc 07-26-04 03:12 AM

very nice setup, I have CWR dual mocal oil cooolers sitting in my room waiting to be installed, just need some time to install them. I'll also post a thread with pictures of my install and how they operate.

jspecracer7 07-26-04 06:31 AM

I think you'll find that your oil temps will be LOWER than your water temps. When I went single 25 row my oil temps would sit appx 5 to 10 degrees higher than my water temps. After I put in dual 25 row oil coolers....I sit 10 degrees UNDER the water temps:D
