Performable tests on a pulled engine
 

What kind of tests can be performed on an engine that is not in the car. Aside from the visual inspection and disassebly, what tests can be performed? Compression test possible? Or is disassembly / reassembly the only real way to go?

I think you guys get the idea. I would rather save installation and labor charges if certain problem areas can be identified and fixed before this thing gets implanted (implant - love this word

Compression - only to get a baseline idea and to listen for the "right" noises at the "right" time as you crank it by hand. You'll need an experienced "rotary ear" for this. You could also do a leak down test I guess but what's the point? There must have been a good reason to yank it in the first place and it should have been diagnosed without a doubt then. The time to do all this stuff is when it's in the car.:(

you can do a compression test on a pulled engine. i did one on a tII engine and used the bellhousing,starter and wired it up to a battery. on a fd i have never done it,i believe the trans is a one piece setup,but i'm not sure. if it is you will have to remove the trans also to do one.

Thanks for your replies guys - I think when I said pulled engine, I lead you guys in the wrong direction. Actually, I am talking about an engine that has not been installed in my car (i.e. re-man, j-spec), not the engine in my car that I have yanked out.

everything i posted still applies. i did it when i got my j-spec for my TII.
