Painting Calipers = Pain in the ass!

This weekend we decided to paint the calipers on my 93. For those who are considering this project, plan on your car being apart a full weekend to include ample drying time. My car only has 50k miles so the parts weren't really dirty to begin with and were simple to clean up with the use of a dremel.

We started with 2 coats of primer as our base, followed by 3-4 coats of high-temp caliper paint, and topped off with 2 layers of clear coat. Even though it took a long time, they really do look nice. It makes a good weekend project if you are bored and looking for something to do. If anyone has any questions let me know. Here are some pics.

Looks nicer than mine...but I just painted them black, so now they look newer, not as shiney as yours. I put elmers glue on the mazda logo and just peeled it off after the paint dried. I also polished the logo before.

Guess I should note that I polished the Mazda logo with the dremel before we clear coated.

Nice Job!

It's been on my list for a while now ... you might have just moved it up in priority after seeing those!

Nice Job Dude,

I was thinking of doing this too...did you totally remove the calipers from the car?

nocab72 11-06-02 03:38 PM

I did mine in one night, never removed them from the car, turned out great. Even painted the little "circles" silver... :D

Sun was setting during a few of the pictures, but the final (bottom right) is finished product in good light.

So is there like some "how to" on this procedure or is it pretty much a no brainer?

huhuh :D

ArchangelX 11-06-02 04:03 PM

It's a no brainer..but DAYAM..that looks SWEET!!

Major PROPS!! I painted my Celica's calipers..but they sure as hell didn't turn out that well. You clear coated them? Like using a spray can clear coat?

BY the way...do brake calipers go bad very easily?

capt. bill1 11-06-02 04:03 PM

apneablue, do you free dive?

apneablue 11-06-02 04:05 PM

yeah, a little bit :D

apneablue 11-06-02 04:07 PM

Anyone ever try polishing them?...you know, just the classic silver look...looking good but not the stand outish type

GoodfellaFD3S 11-06-02 04:08 PM

Looks really nice man. Those rotors look familiar too--just like the ones I have :).

Just for comparison's sake (not trying to highjack your thread ;) ) here is a pic of my calipers, which I had completely polished:

apneablue 11-06-02 04:16 PM

bling-bling on the polished calipers GoodfellaFD3S! I know you can't do that with them still attached to the car, or can you?

teamstealth 11-06-02 04:46 PM

was the primer anything special or just run-of the-mill?

keynote22 11-06-02 05:21 PM

cool sight nocab. Hope those hotties didnt mess up the paint. Ouch get the ring off of the fender baby.... course she could buff it out with that fine backside. lol

7-sins 11-06-02 05:22 PM

Nice pics, I did mine with in two days with the clear coat, w/o it would have been done in one.

Scrapiron7 11-06-02 05:32 PM

Here's another pic. I did take them completely off because I didnt need to drive it and I figured it would allow me to clean them a little better. I snagged a can of clear coat from a local car parts store.

Meiogirl, it was just some rattle can primer from the local parts store, high temp stuff.
