Overheating: Please Help
 

I have a red 94 touring with about 65,000 miles on it that has an overheating problem. The car died this past winter and I havent had a chance to get it started until this past weekend. It turns out that the engine was flooded and the spark plugs were fouled.
When the car eventually started it blew a good amount of smoke from the exhaust which is normal for a flooded car. What is confusing is that it also blew a good amount of smoke from the turbos. So I am guessing that they are getting ready to die if they have not failed all ready.
My question is, could the overheating problem be directly related to the malfunctioning turbos. Or, does it seem to be a separate problem all together? The car does not burn/use up coolant and there are not any coolant leaks as the coolant level has not gone down all year. And the compression is good as well.
I do not want to have to throw a lot of money at this problem because I am planning on going to a LS-1 conversion around the end of summer.(please do not flame me if you do not approve. It is my decision so respect it) But, if the problem is as simple as getting some rebuilt turbos or a replacement thermostat i would love to drive the car for the rest of the summer.

what kind of a catalick converter do u have. i know my stock one made my car overheat, so i just bought a downpipe.

That's "catalytic converter" and it's the "pre-cat" that is replaced with a downpipe, not the former.

Buying a new downpipe had crossed my mind. But, that still does not fix the problem with the "leaky" turbo. I also dont want to get into a situation where I have to buy a upgraded ecu in order to fix any lean running situation that upgrades may cause.

how do you know its overheating if you havent driven it in so long? what did you do when it overheated? a broken up cat can cause a car to overheat do to excessive back pressure.

where from the turbos is the smoke coming and what color? mine usually smoke a little after a run but its oil. (dark colored smoke)

I started it this weekend and drove it for about a block. The temp meter started to rise a little above normal so I shut it off. This is the same problem that the car had before earlier this winter. I am starting to think that the problem stems from a faulty temperature meter compounded by "failing" turbos.

The reason being is that over the winter I noticed the temp meter running about a quarter inch lower than normal. But then, before it overheated it went back to its normal postition.

And by the way, did you Graduate from Towson U? Think that I may have seen you on campus a couple years ago.

as for smoke from your turbos you need to be more clear, if its a little coming from the engine bay. i wouldnt be too worried about it. i mean cmon your turbos have been sitting there for all those months. check your im thinking your coolant sensor may be foul or not plugged in all the way. the car will run rich and flood your engine if that sensor is messed up or not enough coolant in your motor.

Nope, my Rx is Red with white wheels.

Thanks to all, I'll try and replace the thermostat over the weekend. Hopefully that will remedy my problem. Does anyone know how much a thermostat costs?
