overheat problem
 

I was driving normaly on the highway yesterday and all of a suddent I noticed the stick coolant temp gauge was all the way to the top. I started freaking out, took the first exit and stopped the car in a parking. popped the hood, and noticed some coolant had spilled out of the AST cap. checked under the car, no other apparent coolant leak, and the fans were working normally. I could hear the coolant boiling under the hood. I waited about an hour and a half, and tried to get back home. 2 minutes after I started driving, the add coolant buzzer came on and the temprature gauge already started to get over the normal temp.

I stopped for another hour and a half and I managed to find water at 3 AM in the middle of nowhere. added about half a galon of water, topped off the filler neck, AST and overflow tank, and went back home. It took me 5 minutes to get back home, and it was enough for the temperature to raise above normal once again.

The motor seemed to be running just fine, exept for the overheat. Stable idle etc.

I know the stock rad sucks, but overheating after only 5 minutes of very smooth driving is definetly a problem...

woah man...i dunno i had a prob kinda the same as urs today..happened for the first time...jus like u i drove normally...then in the end this rx8 kid was dumb enough to think abt racing me so i put em in his place came home gave the car 3 mins shut the car everythings normal i come out in the porch after abt 40mins n all coolants gone...i told someone to fill it with water while i was under the car n no leaks from newhere...strange...sigh....oh btw it was REALLY REALLY hot today... probably around 34-36degrees celcius...

that needle doesnt mover untill it goes above 110C...thats a tad hot, good luck!

Stupid question, but are you seeing coolant on the ground? I had an overheating issue a couple of months ago, and all it was was a pin hole in one of the hoses. Get that shiznit checked out.

Sounds like you seriously overheated the motor. Not good. You can expect a coolant seal failure in the near future. At least in the short term, it will probably override your limp mode issue.

yeah you definitely don't want to wait when the coolant starts going up to shut the car down.

is your cap holding pressure?
i started having cooling issues long time back but it was usually when i was getting on it, until i replaced the radiator. the car doesnt have white smoke coming out does it?

Here's a link to a site I found. THey say you need to be very careful of this because it's not very often that the needle should move, so something might blow in the near future.... see if you can have someone help u check it out.

I didn't see any leak under the car, I actually lost coolant from the AST cap. I could see some coolant all around it as it probably squirted pretty hard.

It's like the coolant didn't even make it to the radiator. I was a cool night, about 10°C outside, and the car overheated within 5 minutes of normal driving... Is there some kind of valve that keeps the coolant from reaching the radiator?

I was thinking it might be a water pump failure.. possible? the heaters were blowing very hot air though.

It can only be a couple of things...

1) Bad water pump

2) Clogged radiator or system obstruction

3) Broken belt to the water pump

4) Broken hose or coolant leak

5) Fan problem when going slow or sitting still


If you saw the needle hanging out in the red you are going to be needing a rebuild.

if your thermostat is stuck closed, coolant will not flow to the rad.
try replacing it and keep your finger crossed about the overheat.

that must be it. As I said, It's exactly like the coolant didnt even make it to the rad. I even toutched it it and it was not hot. And yeah, for tonight, I'll stop being atheist and I will pray for the engine :lol:
