Oops!

I think i have just popped one or both of the turbos! Took intercooler off today to gain access to the fans better, put it all back together, whent out on a rest run,car was not boosting very well at all, making load wooing noise, turned round to come back and there was a pop then clouds of white smoke out the back,so bad it filled the road, stopped car turned off had a look under bonnet, nothing obviously out of place, starts up fine and drives, oil pressure looks ok,but it just smokes like hell and fills the hole surrounding area with smoke, think its knackerd????

P'd Off Funster!!!

Check the simple stuff first, like a popped off intercooler pipe.

intercooler pipe?

You think that a popped off/loose intercooler pipe could make it smoke like that?

Funster?

1QWIK7 May 23, 2005 02:16 PM

LOL are you high man?

how many people are at your house right now and who are you calling funster?? lol

anyway, are they any other symptoms besides the smoking?

Funster May 23, 2005 02:23 PM

The car seems to drive fine, doesnt come onto boost at all tho and as soon as you drive off the smoke starts. There is clouds of the stuff tho.

Funster.

Personally, when I first read your post, I thought maybe you dropped something into the intercooler path, but I am not sure how something could go from your intercooler, through your engine and to the turbos - without damaging the engine. Does it idle well?

I guess to start, I would expose the turbo inlets and see of there is physical damage there. I don't think there is a easy way to look at the compressor side without removing the turbos?

1QWIK7 May 23, 2005 02:31 PM

are you sure you didnt knock off the boost sensor right by the firewall during your IC installation?

DigDug May 23, 2005 02:42 PM

I'm thinking the white smoke is coolant burning off. If it's smoking that much, it's probably a good bit of coolant making it in somewhere.

Was the "pop" a backfire from the exhaust? Or did it sound like it came from the engine bay?

Funster May 23, 2005 03:26 PM

It smokes as soon as you start it up. Idles fine engine seems to run fine. But there is clouds of white smoke and you can smell the burnt oil.

Its knackered...................

Funster.

DigDug May 23, 2005 03:59 PM

Well, oil smoke is generally bluish, but I've heard some people refer to it as "white smoke". Sounds like a blown turbo.

Rebuild

Hello Everyone

Well, took the old turbo units off today and there was obvious damage to the edges of the blades and also a lot of play in the shaft. They look knackerd it has to said. Anyway i am sending the units to a company in Kettering who are gona do a report as to what is damaged and what needs to be done to repair.

They said the cost will be in the region of £350 to £500 to recondition them. I can also add any extras such as cut back blades,360 thrust bearings, uprated actuators etc etc. Anyone who has any suggestions as to any uprated mods would be helpful too. Gona see what the report comes back as. Then i can post and see if anyone can help as to why this happened or wether it was just the end of their lives of being thrashed.

Cheers for all helpful comments.

Funster.

While the turbos are off, you should still check the engine, because if something did fall into the IC and kill the Turbos, it had to go through the engine.

Retserof May 24, 2005 05:23 PM

Sounds like there was a big boost leak from having the ductwork open. The turbos could have overrevved and partially self-destructed. A boost leak would account for the wooing noise.

Were the damaged turbo blades you saw on the compressor or the exhaust side of the turbos? If compressor, the nicked blades would send bits into the intercooler and possibly through it into the engine, causing damage. If the exhaust side, the bits of blade would just go out the exhaust and lodge in the pre-cat or cat, if you have one.

Funster.

You blew off an air hose. It could be one of the IC pipes. Its somewhat common when you take off the hoses and replace them, not clamping them down tight.

The wooo-ing noise is your boost being vented to atmosphere.

The pop was probably a backfire from the car, happened to me before when I blew of an IC hose.

Clouds of white smoke... what does it smell like, gas or coolant?
