OK! What is the actual weight for the 93 touring model

I have heard that it is 2750 to 2850 and that the base model is the lightest then came the touring and the R-1 is the heaviest. I notice that at the driver side I saw a plate that said that my car is weight at 3200 lbs. Is this the actual weight of my car and is it accurate.

My PEP weighted 2841 with 1/4 tank and nobody in it.
A touring should weigh a couple pounds more but not much.

What you're reading on the door sticker is the gross vehicle weight. That's the weight of the car loaded with passengers, etc.

Most sources put the weight of the touring model at 2,862 lbs.
It's the heaviest.

Mazda lists the weight of the '93 base model at 2,789 lbs.
It's the lightest.

The PEP and PEG packages are somewhere between the two
extremes.

The R-1 / R-2 models are usually listed as weighing 2,800 lbs.
although you would think the later models with two air bags might weigh a tiny bit more.

The gap between the weights is so small that what you weigh in comparison to other drivers is probably more important. I have
heard of people getting so weight conscious, that they suck all the windshield washer fluid out of their car. Actually, it makes some sense when you think about where the weight of that fluid is located.

P.S. all these weights are for manual transmission cars. Add another 68 lbs for auto trans.

weight

I weighed my car recently, it is a 1993 base model with an automatic tranny, and it weighed 2890 lbs.

GaryK 08-14-01 09:24 PM

I weighed my 93 Touring and it was a hefty 2940 lbs. with somewhere around 1/3 tank of fuel. My car has a few items that add weight such as a roll bar and 18 inch wheels and tires. But it also has lost some weight due to aftermarket exhaust, etc.

Scorpio 08-14-01 10:19 PM

I had my '94 R2 weighed and it was 2730 with 1/2 tank gas (the stock precat and cat weigh at least 700 pounds (ok, maybe not that much, but they are heavy!)). I had just gone non-seq so lots of stuff had been removed (airpump is also heavy).

I also had each corner weighed while I was there...check it out at:

http://www.micromanx.com/goble/rx7/p...ht/weight.html

Since then, I've lost another 10 pounds when I went to a lightweight flywheel! :)

GoodfellaFD3S 08-14-01 10:36 PM

I weighed my R1 recently and was pleasantly surprised to find out it weighed 2720 lbs (with an almost-empty gas tank). The weight-saving measures that I have done are swapping out the precat w/a downpipe and the stock catback w/a PFS. I'm getting rid of the cat in favor of a midpipe soon; hopefully that'll push me below 2700.

Bringing this back from the dead I'm a little curious as to what cause the huge weight difference between the R1 , and the Touring .

sun/moon roof is like is one of the major issues . I think its about 80 lbs ?

but i'm curious if anyone has weighed the extra parts like the bose system , and the rear windshield washer , the cruise control . does all of this add up to about 250 lbs ?

I weighed my 1992 JDM for comparison for you US guys. I get 2711 pounds (1230kg right on) without me in it.

18 inch wheels, stock car with one main cat converter still in it. Auto trans.

Interesting that your car and my car are very similar and yet mine weighs about 180 lbs more. I wonder where that weight comes from?

Are the emissions the same?

freaknbigpanda 01-07-14 10:16 PM

JDM cars don't have the precat so that probably accounts for some (all?) of it

Fritz Flynn 01-07-14 10:46 PM

Lightest is the 93 base and the heaviest is the 94 touring. Bone stock the cars weigh approx 2750 to 2870 with out fuel. I'd est there's no more than 120lbs difference between the lightest and heaviest.

Lots of cool info out there about the weights of the exhaust parts, spare etc..... it's not completely accurate but fairly close.

Mazda was really careful with the weight so it's super hard to loose any but you can get 100lbs out or drop a base model down to 2650 which is fairly light weight car w/o much fuss.

exhaust 35 or more
turbo jeff battery 15
strip the rear hatch area 50 (exhaust and road noise will increase quite a bit)

Drop another 100 plus with some sacrifce :)

race seats on custom non sliding rails
AC
PS
Radio
Air bag or bags
airpump
other emissions pipes solenoids etc....
radio antenna
front tow hooks (i don't think I've ever used them for anything)

etc....

Now you have a 2500 pound FD that will kick some serious ass :)

SA3R 01-08-14 08:40 AM

Good question. I think because the JDM does not have things including:

No Precat
No AWS system
No Emissions system
No airbags

And mine being a base base model also has

No sunroof
No Bose
No cruise control

And I removed

All air con including radiator, pump, lines and core inside the heater box

Some other stuff that was not needed

All the unused bracketry that is factory installed for cruise control retrofit.

Spare wheel.

So mine is 2711 with quarter tank of gas, auto trans, 18 inch wheels, four seats and full tool set and jack. I think if I were to ditch the jack and tools, I could break into the 2600s... :p

Ah! I have cruise control and the car is basically stock, with the exception of the Pettit downpipe and Racing Beat exhaust.

That would likely explain the difference then, yes. My car is still liveable in day-to-day driving despite what it sounds like. Myself and my passengers never notice most of the missing items and the car still appears factory stock inside and out. So it is possible to do :)

All of the bits of the sunroof that can be safely removed total about 23.5 lbs.

djseven 01-09-14 11:32 PM

I've been weighing some parts in the last few weeks from my personal while making some changes.
Factory Pre-Cat/down pipe was 22lbs
Pettit 3" down pipe was right at 7lbs equalling a 15lbs saving

I saved a whopping 3lbs with my Aluminum driveshaft.
Lightweight flywheel and counterweight saved me a little shy of 7lbs

I forgot to weigh the Bonez Hi-Flow cat before boxing it to ship. I'm going back to the stock cat but I imagine a 15-20lb difference there.

I'm hoping with stock cat, full sequential/emmissuons, water/meth, fire extinguisher and mount along with heavier aftermarket wheels my R2 will stay under 2800lbs. Should know with in a month.

 you carry 111lbs of tools in your car regularly??? are you carrying around a full size jack? a craftman 540pc tool set weighs less than 100lbs so im just curious what you are carrying around:lol:

What do you mean by that ?

parts from the sunroof which can be removed ? while still maintaining USE ?

or do you mean removing the whole thing and weighed it ? I think im gonna strip my sunroof this weekend if its the first option haha .

I weighed my touring with no weight reduction, spare tire, 18" wheels, 1/2 a tank ,pwr steering, A/C, 6 speed and one of those AL v8 thingy's and it was 2835.

The 6 speed thingy weighs more than the 5 speed thingy. I'm guessing the clutch and fly wheel also weigh more.

The V8 aluminum long block thingy weighs more than the 13b long block thingy.

Either your scale is broken or you have some weight reduction.

Don't believe me look up those two things.

Trust me the intercooler doesn't weigh 100lbs.

t-von 04-04-14 03:17 PM

This makes me wish I had weighed my 94 touring before the NA 20b swap. :( My hope is that the weight evens out.

Edit: Keep in mind that the auto 94 tourings are the heaviest.
