OK - are BOVs and CRVs supposed to do this?
 

Hello,
OK, when I got the car back from the dealership, they had connected the hoses wrong so all the boost was going out through my BOV. Well, after Chris Sanders fixed all of that, I took it home and disconnected the BOV from the airbox (wanted to hear the BOV better). Then I found that while driving around, it sounds like boost is still leaking out through the valve until you really give it gas, then it closes off and the turbos spool. I thought "well, when all that air was being forced through the BOV before, it probably messed up the valve". So I then dug in and switched the CRV and the BOV valves. Well, that didn't seem to do anything, so I was wondering if this is how they are supposed to work, or if both of those valves are shot.

Again, when under light load (barely pressing on accelerator) I can hear air rushing out through the BOV (sounds like a boost leak). When I push the pedal down more, the valve shuts and it's OK.

my crv blows lots of air until i have boost

The CRV vents boost from the secondary turbo.
That's what it does until you go WOT and it switchs from using just the primary to using both the primary and secondary.
I think this is what you're describing. It's normal.

I think you just defined how a BOV works. It sees vacuum, it opens. It sees boost, it closes.

it's because the stock BOV and CRV have weak springs, so they stay open under vaccum

get an aftermarket, it goes away, but you loose the ability of telling people you have a jet engine in your car

the CRV and BOV are actually the same... try getting those vaccume pressure tool to see if both are ok.

maybe u should go to rob robbinette's site to learn more about this two... and how a turbo works... ;)

You bov/crv is fine they are supposed to do this. When your at almost 0psi of boost your still under vac so your bov's will remain open as they are supposed to. However you know that since you have a ton of exhaust flowing thru the turbos they are actually pushing quite a lot of air, just not quite enough to create positive pressure so the bov have quite a lot of air to vent off.

Its exactly the way they are suppsed to operate and installing a aftermarket bov isnt going to change a thing. it has nothing to do with weak springs, they all do that you just might not hear it as much with a aftermarket one.

Yep, the BOV exhales under vacuum and light cruise throttle. Sounds funky. Everyone wants the BOV noise at decel/shift, but it's not an open/closed issue. The BOV works harder than you think it does.
