oil stinks of petrol

now i know quite a bit about cars and maintanence but i noticed the other day when checking the oil that it stank with petrol and is black in colour..it is also thinner than usual. i have only had the car a couple of months and done around 1000miles since. When i first bought the car it had nice golden oil in. I do expect the oil to get dirty after time but not so bloody quickly! Im very concerned about the petrol smell in the oil too..is this normal with used oil? or do you reckon my engine is running too rich which in turn is diluting the oil? any answers will be excitingly looked forward to. i did a search but sooo many things came up with oil id be here till next week..soz

Car is an FD3s Type R. Completley standard.

This is partially normal due to the blow by caused by design of the rotary engine. It shouldnt be "crazy" thin, this is just another one of the many reasons to change your oil regularly.

a little hint of gas in the oil is fine. i would switch to a heavier grade of oil like 20 50 and my oil is always black even if i change it at 500 miles.

^ A recent thread that discusses that same issue.
I understand your concern as I wondered the same thing shortly after getting my car. But as mentioned earlier, just stay on top of oil changes and check it frequently. After a while, you'll get a better sense of what is normal about this car. And don't be surprised if, right after an oil change, the oil appears darker than "usual" as the oil that was stranded in your coolers mixes with the new.
At the risk of controversy, you might also consider going to a good quality synthetic oil. (<another good search topic). Good luck.

Mine has been like this since I got it and I have changed the fuel system 5 times so I dont think it is injector/fuel system related. I suspect that it has something to do with the side seals since that is where fuel could get into the oil. I just change my oil frequently (no more than 2000 miles) and forget about it. I dont think there is anything you can do about it and I also dont think it is a sign that the end is near...

Oh and I think the fuel in the oil would be a good arguement for not doing the synthetic. Since you would still have to change it often it would hurt my feelings to be using the expensive stuff.

change the oil every 1500 miles....10% fuel dilution is very common with these cars

The only time my oil had a noticeable fuel smell was when I let it go more than 2K miles between oil changes. Since then, I change the oil every 1000-1500 miles.

I change the plugs every 4K in my car - now that is a bitch. Changing your oil takes like 15 min and costs less than $15. Plus it makes me feel good to think about that nice new oil running throughout my engine - $15 to feel good, that is a bargain.
