Oil pressure real low, common problem with pressure gauges?

I got the FD back out of storage, and the oil pressure is real low at idle (like not at zero, but below the first tick mark above zero at idle. It'll go near 60 if I just rev it to 3500 or so though.. really weird.

It's usually the oil pressure sender that has a problem. Sometimes just cleaning any/all dirt and oil from the contacts makes it work like noew. Other times you just need to replace it.

The sender has a metal part that holds a small spring . that part wears out ,thus sending a low signal to the gauge . First clean the wire connector on the sender , if that does not work replace the sender unit .

Does anyone have a picture of what it looks like?

duboisr 09-11-03 09:48 PM

Do you want to know where it is located ?

Yes, that is what I meant.:)

It's southwest of the oil filter (if the 3rd gens are anything like 2nd gens). And if they're similar design, it looks like a big bell sticking out of the side of your engine.

It's funny, I never had any problems with my FC's oil sending unit, it worked like a charm.

South west of the oil filter, yes find the oil filter on thedrivers side of the engine toward the bacs . the sender is 3-4 inches below and 1-2 inches forward. It may have a black rubber cover and has a one wire connector . It is about 2 - 2.5 inches in diameter .That means look down from the oil filter Southwest .

bacs== back ,,,,,CAN NOT SPELL, or type,, but I can find the oil filter .Good skill

That didn't work for me, and I doubt it'll work for him.

Barwick 09-12-03 10:30 AM

well I'm about to change it anyhow, because of the whole storage thiing

SpiritR 09-13-03 10:55 PM

good idea, let us know how it turns out.

NorthwindHost 09-14-03 12:27 AM

lol, oil change won't work. It's just the sender.

Just clean it and it should be ok, if not, then just replace.

Sometimes I just hate mazda for the half ass jobs they did when adding parts to the car.

Your pretty sure of yourself. LOL

Hey,

Just want to thank you all for the answer. I just got my car running and have the same concern. My only other concern is that cold, the pressure is 60+ psi but after warming up, it drops considerably.

Cheat and install a proper gauge and pressure sensor...

I did, and it works a treat. ;)

I had the same/similar problem: oil pressure was fine when the revs were up, but at idle the pressure was very low or sometimes zero on the gauge, it seemed to be worse on hot days. I cleaned the connection on the oil pressure sender unit and it helped a little, temporarily. Finally put in a new OEM sender unit and the oil pressure reading has been normal - very comforting.
Bought my oil pressure sender from Mazdaformance (http://www.mazdaformance.com) for $71 - p.n. N3A1-14-820.
(Yes it is a late post, just contributing my 2 cents.)
