oil leak on my 3rd gen???

It seems like my rear seal might be leaking on my 3rd gen. Had it replaced at Pettit 2.2 years ago. How bad is this? I figured just a oil spot in my garage floor every few days, no big deal.. But is there anything serious that can come from this?? Leaks about 2-3 inch circle every 4-7 days. Not that bad but drives me crazy!

you may need a shaft saver if the flywheel is worn . Garfinkle fixed mine with one and he is going to do another one soon for a customer in Nashville . Her new seal will only last about 1 year . the shaft saver should make it last several years like mine'

What the hell is a shaft saver and what does a worn flywheel have to do with a leaking rear main seal?

93blackrx 09-24-02 01:54 AM

yeah?

Is there a quick fix or should I saw How hard is it to put in a rear main seal? I take it I have to separate the transmision? I think I might just deal with the leak!! Any sugestions??

Are you sure it's the rear main seal. I just had my oil pan sealed with silicone from a leak.

Turbonut 09-24-02 12:54 PM

Should have used an oil pan saver!!!!!!

mike, you might as well replace the flywheel with a lightened one and get a new clutch if your gonna replace the rear main seal. i really dont understand why the rear main seal would have gone out that early though.

duboiser- please explain this "shaft saver". can it be done with the engine still assembled?

Serously, a small amount is just annoying, wouldn't cause any harm. If larger amount, it could get up on the disc.
The dealer replaced mine when the car only had 11,000 miles. Same thing, small spot on floor.

What is that, RTV won't leak.

Sorry, it was just a pun to compliment the term shaft saver on previous post.

Turbobrain, I already have a act clutch with 9.5 flywheel in near new shape!! Thats when I had Cam replace the rear main seal...

I will look again but I first thought it was my turbos but they are fine and oil pan looks dry also. My next thought was the rear main seal. So looks like it will just leak for awhile. I am mainly just a neat freak and hate having a oil leak....
